In MA, only the 10000 lb trucks get tested. At most, on smaller setups like ours they do a two-stage soot test. Depending on the year and build location, the pre'98s had cats, some did, some didn't. I think on dodgeram.org there's a break down by year.

I have no cat, straight mbrp. I fear that i will not pass the soot test this year. . way too much fuel...

scott down at mass diesel said they dont do soot tests. and besides his truck is daily driver i think, and im pretty sure it blows a lot of smoke. how does he pass soot test???

My 02 had a resonator, had being the key word. I think the cat deal is a state by state thing, CA especially. Don't have soot checks in MO, but do they check them at WOT or do the let you ease into the throttle? That would probably be the difference between some of us passing and failing.

I will say, that 2 years ago, first time i had to have the truck inspected, a dealer told me about the soot test. Later that same year, when my stock exhaust broke, I decided to go with the strait pipe - part of that decision process was calling and visiting w/ 3-4 dealers to see what was the policy for inspection. I never heard a consistent story.



in MA they only do emissions testing every other year. This would be the year for me to get tested, if they do it... And, i'll report back what happens. .

i think that's on a manufacture/dealership level, by time it gets into the end users hands the epa doesn't really care, the one that screws with you is the inspection station and the extent that goes to depends on how hard they hug the trees in your area

Well, that could be. The way Dodge's tech support, the emmisions' station tech, and a couple other shops explained it to me was that the surefire way to tell if your truck came with a cat (and thus is required to have one to pass), is to look at the build plate on the timing gear case, just in front of the pump. There is a little box on there that says "Catalyst No. " or something like that, and if the box has numbers stamped in it, the truck is supposed to have a cat. Great info! I am going to check the data plate on my 97 today.



When I bought my truck it already had a 4" MBRP turbo-back exhaust system on it, so I never got to see if it had a cat or not. When I went to get emissions tested in Colorado, they made no mention of it... and my truck passed emissions.



To all those worried about passing emissions... put the fuel plate all the way back, afc full back, and move that starwheel all the way back as well. It will run extremely sluggish but you will pass emissions!!
