I went to a 3" straight pipe last week by just replacing the muffler with a straight section and I'm quite happy about it. Oo. Oo.
Not too loud, nice, moderate, earthy sound like one would expect from a diesel truck.
Picked up at least 1# of boost WOT.
Less Smoke. (I guess because turbo is spooling up easier and producing more boost earlier).
Lower EGT's by 150deg? (My benchmarks are while towing so this is so far a seat-of-pants measure)
We noted that the mechanic(?)
that installed the muffler got carried away with the air wrench and overtightened the clamps which creased the pipes down to almost 2 1/2". Also, the pipe coming out of the muffler was damaged internally and causing a bad restriction too. As I learned in the Navy, pay "attention to DETAIL!"
I won't be surprised to see some improvement in mileage too.
Certainly with today's prices that would be nice.
