Any truth to Ford getting the CTD in their truck soon?

I am thinking about building a 5" straight pipe from the bottom of the down pipe back, dumping out in front of the rear tire. I'm looking for opinions on sound quality. I like the straight piped sound, but haven't heard a third generation truck with one yet. I have read alot of post on guys doing this and leaving the cat on for a good sound. I have no cat on my '04 so would this sound ok.

My '03 is straight piped and stacked, several people have come up to me to tell me how good my truck sounded. It has its own sound, it sounds nothing like the previous generation Cummins. It get obnoxiously loud @ WOT and load.

I think straight piped is ok with stacks, but out the side it will bounce off overything you drive by. Gets a little loud. Neat when you pass semis and you hear your own truck bouncing off them instead of hearing them.

one thing to about dumping your exhaust right infront of your rear tire is soot. Its going to build up there and turn the side of your truck black faster than you think. believe me. I had my 05 straight piped for a little while with cat and in my honest opinion, it was too "raspy", doesnt sound like the 2nd gens do straight piped. But certainly its your truck so do as you wish. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I had my 05 straight piped with cat also. I agree, it was too raspy and also too loud (for my taste). Now I have a straight thru muffler and it sounds excellent.

Muffler

After reading quite a bit on the third gen exhaust sound with/without muffler I ordered a 41" X 9" straight thru muffler from the frieghtliner truck shop here. I think that will give the sound I want. I dont want it to sound crappy like a ricer. It will be here tomorrow. I let you know how it sounds.

Muffler

Well the muffler came in but the adapter and small parts didn't. :( . I went looking for an adapter and found an exhaust shop on the other side of town with some 4" mufflers. They were takeouts from 4" kits. The folks buying them wanted straight pipes. They had a 5" tip in stock as well so I had them do the install for me. They welded all the pipes and bent up some hangers that use the stock rubber isolators. This is exactly what I wanted. No drone, or crappy sound. Sounds good and healthy.

I did a milage test comming home from work to the muffler shop. The trip computer said my average was 25 at 60 mph with the cruise on (dont laugh I know it's off a little). After the muffler install it read 27. 2 at the same speed same interstate over several miles. That's a difference of 2. 2 mpg. I'll test again tomorrow morning if I have time to keep the speed down.
