So I was thinking of losing the Kitty this week. If the muffler fell off also, how loud and obnoxious are the 3rd Gen's. What is a good priced replacement muffler? I know there is a Donaldson/Nelson that is like 51" long, does it work good? I don't want to buy a whole new exhaust system, since it is already 4 inch all the way back. I cannot have anything that is going to wake up the neighbors and I don't want a drone going down the freeway.

Thanks in advance.

Better leave the kitty on then. I had a straight pipe and my truck was pretty loud and it droned on the highway. My truck is even louder now, (sounds awesome though and the noise doesnt bother me any) with straight pipe and 2 6" stacks right behind the cab

My '03 drones bad between 65-72mph unloaded. It's not too loud unless you romp on the throttle. I was worried about ******* off neighbors too so I asked my wife what she thought and she said it wasn't too loud. I am trying to find a muffler that will give me close to the same sound but kill the drone. So far I haven't heard of anything that will give me that.

I have a buddy with an '00 with a kitty and no muffler. It sounds good.

Jeff

I wanted to remove the kitty partly because I am concerned about plugging it up when I get a Smarty in a couple months. Will it be o. k. I thought that if I start pushing extra fuel through it would start to plug it up.

I still have my cat, but I took off my muffler today and was surprised that it hardly made a difference. I'm glad I did the muffler delete rather than an aftermarket muffler, because it's just barely louder than stock. It sounds real nice in a tunnel or parking garage, but just around town, it's just a hair louder than stock.

You can short shift to save the neighbors and it's won't be bad.

Unfortunatley you'll have some drone in the 2100-2400rpm area. On my truck, with the wondows up and the radio on a low setting, it's no unbearable.

My 04 came catless. I run 5" straight and a 6" tip. It's very loud.

Ditto. I run Geno's MEK, when warmed up, sounds like a truck should sound, even with an auto. When cold, well, thats another story. It'll rattle windows a block away.

then you will not want to straight pipe your truck. my neighbors probably hate me :-laf

Maybe you'll get lucky and a fellow straight-piped TDR member nearby will chime in with an offer to let you go for a ride in their truck.

I straight-piped mine about this time last year. After 6 or 8 weeks, I had enough, and replaced everything with a Magnaflow #15989 5" system.

Personally, I'd think twice before butchering my exhaust system.

I posted the same thing on a local site. I think I will wait until I can ride in a truck with a modified exhaust before I butcher mine.

A resonator will kill the drone, and take the edge off of the sound, and make it a bit deeper.

I've been straight piped for 3 years now. Never have had one bit of drone. 4" turbo back with a 5" tip. Now that the twins are in there's still no drone, but the exhaust is quite.

When my son straight piped his 03 I told him is sounded like a 40K derby car but he thought it was cool.

I did the 51" donaldson on my 03 and the sound was nice IMO, a little deeper sound, non offensive and better flow. M090544 was the part # and was pretty cheap from a trucking supply.
I cannot have anything that is going to wake up the neighbors
Then you don't want a straight pipe.

I'm running a cat and no muffler into a 7" stack under the bed. Loud as hell. Sounds good though, but really loud. Drones pretty bad on the highway, but I don't mind the trade off for the down low rumble.

Kitty might bite !!!

I know of several people who have been stopped by the cops (not smog gods) and they looked under the truck for the cataclysmic converter . . and when they found none. . they were warned/cited . One is still pending in court in NJ.

I'm running straight pipe no kitty, was very loud, but when i got tired of cleaning the soot off the bumper and rear quarter, i bought a turn down tip. It completely changed the tone of my cummins, not so loud anymore just deep toned. awesome.

04. 5 Ram3500/SRW/QC/4. 10/FASS 95/AFE stg2/ATS Arc Intake/Edge Juice w/EZ stack/4inch Straight pipe No Kitty/BD X-Monitor/18. 5 MPG

My '01 has 5" mitred stacks and has a great, deep rumble at low speeds and roars pretty good when I get on it. The '94 has a 4" straight pipe with a 6" tip pokin' out before the rear axle. Although I feel it could be louder, I have had friends tell me it is pretty obnoxious. That side-out exhaust is excellent for blasting idiots who need an earful from a mighty Cummins!
