I don't know what Texas regs are but I sure got the DOT inspection at Orange when a trooper pulled me over for "a hole in my muffler". Told him no hole, no muffler. Completed inspection and gave me a warning. Past him a few more times after that and just let up to quiet it down.

So do any of you Texans out there know how the inspection regs here work with respect to straight pipe exhausts? I've heard conflicting stories on what will and won't pass inspection. And I haven't seen the regs lately.

My inspection is due in a month, so maybe I should just stay the way I am till I get the new sticker... then swap it and have a year to enjoy :D :D :D

I was at the inspection station this very day getting the wife's Explorer inspected. (it was due last month, D'oh!) I asked the guy if he would pass a straight piped diesel. His answer was that in Texas, they consider the turbo (they use "turbine") a muffler because it breaks up the exhaust pulses. Thus no problem. He has been doing this for a long time and seems to know his stuff.

I sure would love to find something in legal writing that a turbo is good enough if there is such a thing in writing. I called about the Jardine (Magnaflow) resonators today and talked to Matt. He said they are just a shorter version (20" over all) of the muffler they sell. They still have packing and all in there so I probably wouldn't like that sound either. For now I will just run it with the pipe inside the muffler and see what happens. I'm not all that worried about being pulled over because I am careful around the cops and go easy on the loud pedal. Thanks for all the suggestions; I might try some of these things as time goes on.

Texas Inspection Regs

Well, I did manage to find the Texas Vehicle Inspection regulations on the web. I've been getting some conflicting stories about whether or not a straight pipe is allowed. But from this, looks like the turbo IS considered to be a "muffler".

Here's a link to the exhaust portion of the regs for Texas.

Looks like I'll have to print this off and carry it in the truck once I get it straight piped.

How many decibels?

Apparently in Washington State as long as we are not above 95 decibels as measured by SAE test procedure J1169 modifications that amplify or increase volume are ok.

Does anyone know the decibels of a 12 valve with straight 3"?

In SAE test procedure J1169 (that BHaner talked about... ) I wonder if there's specs for: distance from the pipe to the decibel meter... . size and type of construction materials used in the test room..... weighted or non-weighted decibel scale... and most important of all... . is the engine under a load or not.....

Bottom line: if a member of the law enforcement community wants to give you a hard time, he/she will do so. Play dumb... . throwing law books in their face as you hand them your license and registration is only going to make things worse. Save the laws for your hearing when you are appealing the citation.

FWIW - Harley Davidson bikes with drag pipes are kinda loud, I wonder how they get away with it.....

BTW, I've only been pulled over once with this truck (many times with the old truck... ... ) and the officer did mention that it was loud... . but other than that... everyone just looks at the truck funny as it sounds like a Freightliner with rabies.

Well

Well, Colorado done passed a muffler required on big rig law. I am sure it probablt stems from too many guys dumping their Jakes in towns. I do know it only requires a muffling device. Know guys just running small resonaters. I do not know if this law flows over to pickup trucks. It may for the California part of the state?
