I recently removed the muffler from my 04. 5 and welded a straight/"cheater" pipe in its place. The sound is awesome,I've had it at varied rpms and no drone. I left the cat in place so there is no warranty/emissions issue {could be why there is no drone} Sounds like a big rig!!!!! Much more the cost is less than half of a cat back or aftermarket system. If you have the work done for you the cost should be around $120. 00 or so. In my opinion its a no brainer, less out of pocket money and still an awesome sound!!!

P. S. also have the turbo silencer removed and the air baffles

inside the turbo air intake tube are air baffles. if you completely disassemble the tube you can see them. carefully pry the top off and tap the baffles out. to re-install the top you will need a little crazy glue. It allows you to hear the air flow better. If you do a search on it there are a few that have posted pics and detailed instructions. If you can remove the silencer ring your more than skilled enough to do this... .

Basically a home made AFE Torque tube, nothing to cancel out the air noise and inhibit air flow. I love my torque tube. Sounds alot more balanced between turbo and other noises, not so muffled.

Thanks. My '05 will be at the dealer tuesday or Wen. Just trying to get caught up with these 3rd. gen. I spent all day Saturday removeing all my goodies from my '99 dually. a fellow forgets all the extra's until it's time to take them off!

Did you have the "vibe" or drone prior to removing the muffler?

Nope thankfully no vibe or drone. I have noticed better throttle response though

Next project possible air intake and then edge!!!!!

On my '03 I removed the muffler and replaced it with a section of 4" flex-pipe from a local truck shop for about 28 bucks. I had to fashion a couple of new hangers to hold it in place though. As far as the intake tube baffles it's much, much easier to take a plain hacksaw blade and saw through the baffles instead of breaking the top off the cannister.

we also have cat test pipes for racing and off road use too.

Just so you know, adding that disclaimer at the end doesn't make what you're telling someone legal.

Tempering with emissions is a crime regardless of whether the vehicle is operated on the road or not.

Even for racing and off road purposes, technically, removing an emissions control device is still tampering.

Now if you didn't remove it and you're just the driver, well, they can prove it. :D

I'll try to get a video of what mine sounds like with a straight pipe if I dyno this weekend.

I like it a lot better than the 5" exhaust I had. I loved how loud the 5" was outside but inside it was like ear drum suicide.

I do miss how loud the turbo was with 5" and the afe/tt, with the cat back in place it shuts the whistle down a bit.

TX Gooseneck,

Was the 5" much louder than the straight piped stock system. I'm thinking of replacing my stock 3. 5" straight piped system with a 5" straight pipe set up. The interior noise is fine with my current exhaust but I'd just like to know if the noise increase is drastic with a 5" system.

Yeah. I couldn't stand to be in the truck. Empty it was alright, but loaded was awful. The amount of drone at 70mph would shake the coins in my console.

I've been told my truck is freakishly loud though.

it's perfectly legal on a vehicle that isn't used on public roads OR for "testing" purposes to check for a clogged cat...
