What is the Stock Boost PSI @ WOT

First transmission oil change question: adjust or not adjust?

I just installed the Geno's Muffler Elimination kit. I only drove the truck about 5 miles unloaded, but my first impressions are good. There is a little bit of a low pitched rumble on acceleration, but no noticable diffrence at cruising speed. Can't make and determinations on EGT or power yet, but will keep you posted.

Straight Piped and Lovin' it!

Posm-

Had my resonator and muffler replaced with straight pipe. (3") The local muffler shop charged me $50. 00 to remove them and replace with a straight pipe. Love the sound, especially under load. At 75 mph, man, it sounds sweet. Mama doesn't even ***** about how loud it is. Course, she's used to riding the Harley and used to a lot of noise. When I get into it, it'll set off car alarms!

Try it, you'll like it! BTW, we have a Wetumka in Okla. My Dad grew up there. Think the spelling is different?

So how loud?

So how loud is Loud?? Does it ever get high pitched at all? Another TDR member from tulsa had a pretty hot 12V truck that had a straight pipe on it when he got it. It was LOUD... once you got boost(which was about 45 or 50psi) it sounded like a big gorrilla fart(if you can imagine that sound lol) But sounded sweet at idle. This flowmaster I have sucks. . sounds like stock. I can hear the pipe when pulling about 7 or 8Klbs and I am WOT in 4th or 5th

Lets hear more,I'm just about ready to skin the cat but i'm not sure whether to go straight or w/ a flow thru muffler. sure wouldn't like a stock sound after going w/ out a muffler for so long.

I am taking my muffler out of my Jannetty kit as soon as i can find a shop that stocks 4" Pipe. Aparently there is a big rush on it because i cant find ANYONE who has it in stock around here.

Muffler and resonator gone!

Had mine removed and replaced with straight pipe today. It sounds great. Time will tell if the sound will get tiresome, but for now, I can't seem to get the:D:D off my face. The only thing I am certain of is the the original muffler and resonator will never be back on the truck.

Does straight piping a 3" stock system with no cat lower EGT's any appreciable amount to a slightly bombed 24v? How about compared to a 4" system?

Thanks... .

Hey guys,

I had my muffler and resonator replaced with the Walker straight thru muffler about two months ago and it's too loud. I also have this strange whistling sound when I get in it. Anyway, I'm looking for an alternative way to go. Thinking of trying the flowmaster next.

If any of you guys want to get rid of your resonator, I'll be happy to take it off your hands. I believe if I put the resonator back on in front of the Walker it would cut down on the noise some and eliminate the drone I have at 2000 rpm.

Contact me if you want to part with your resonator.

I did the same thing you did. Your right that whistling noise will drive you batty. I reninstalled my resonator after about three days. I made no difference at all. In fact I think it made the whistling noise louder. I got rid of it all and installed a Jardine 4". More than happy now. :)

How Loud is Loud?

Bad340fish-

Don't know how to explain how loud, loud is? (Sounds like a Clinton argument ;) ) We don't live too far from each other if you want to hear what mine sounds like. My number is in the Travel Companion if you want to call. It's pretty loud when your accelerating and under boost. It's not real loud in the cab, but if you're going under a bridge, etc. you can really hear it then.

MuddFlapp-

We got back from a fishing trip to Northern Minnesota a few weeks ago, about 2,000 miles round trip. It was about a 16 hour drive one way (with stops) and no one complained of the sound during the trip. (My wife was along) Believe me, if the sound had bothered her, she would have said something. She even commented it was a nice sound to sleep to. :D

I'm sure a straight pipe is not everyone's "cup of tea", but I still have enough kid left in me to really enjoy the sound and you get a lot of looks from other diesel owners, especially those ones with the strange V8 diesels?

I had heard a Cummins with a 3" straight before I changed mine. Maybe good advice is to listen to one before you make the change?

If'n I was going to do it again I would get the Jardine muffler. Install it behind the resonator ( 4' outlet ) and use a 4 to 3 back to factory tail pipe.

The 3" down pipe allows the hot ( increased volume )exhaust velocity to be maintained from the turbo and expand in the resonator and muffler where it cools and loses volume so a 4" tail pipe is probably not needed. I could not find a shop in town that would do the pipe work for less than $150 so I went with the Jardine 4". This is what the factory set up does except they use a baffled ( restrictive ) muffler that increases back pressure. The factory set up is adequate for a stock 215 hp but marginal at best for the 235 or higher hp due to the muffler restriction. The 4"x30" Jardine is not a quiet as stock but is much quieter than the Walker or Flowmaster.

Noise does not increase performance, just p s es every one else off. I don't know any one that is impressed with a bike or vehicle that has loud exhaust. If that is the only way a person can get noticed then they have a inferiority problem that people cussing at them will not solve. I have a 10 second car that is quiter than the rattle of my Cummins. It gets all the attenion needed from performance not by damaging the hearing of the people near by. There are a couple of CTD's here that have straight pipes and it is not pleasant to have them pass on the freeway ( they are usually speeding and weaving in and out of rush hour traffic ). The others are usually trying to make the horses they are towing deaf. It's not how LOUD you can go but how quicly you can get to a safe speed quietly.

I have been straight piped since last November and love it. I was told that after awhile I would reinstall a muffler to cut the noise, but we(my family) just finished up a 4850 mile round trip and I love the sound even more! My exhaust sets up a resnates about 2000, but anywhere below or above that its great. When I have the cruise set at 65-68 its running about 2000 rpms and thats about where we drove most of the trip.

My 2 kids have already told me that they want 2 - 4" stacks behind the cab and they would even go as big as 5".

What I would say is try it for a month or so and if you still don't like it then put the muffler on.

Here is what my rig looks like at a truck stop in New Mexico. .

Inferiority?

Shooter-

Your right, loud doesn't equal performance, we agree on that.

I'll have to, politely as I can, disagree with you that loud exhausts pi$$ everyone off, at least they don't around here. As to having an inferiority problem, I definitely don't have one and I'm not sure that having loud exhausts and inferiority problems necessarily go hand in hand. I know a guy that does have inferiority problems and he rides a Goldwing that you can stand next to while it is running and you can hear your watch ticking. Wonder why he doesn't have loud exhausts???????

I feel like you have duly chastised me for loud exhausts on the Cummins, Harley, Street Road, tractor, etc. I didn't really put them on anything to "impress" other people. I put them on there for my enjoyment. Don't know where you are from, but if I pass you on the way to a safe speed, and the noise offends you, I sincerely apologize because I don't wish to offend.

This is what the good ole USA is about, everyone doing their own thing within reason. Hope you have a nice quiet day. :D

Dave

I didn't install the 3" straight for the noise, it just came with what I did. After I did the exhaust there was a big difference in the performance. Any type of restriction changes the performance! I am sure that if I were to install a 4" (turbo to tail pipe) with a straight thru muffler it would be less restrictive than my 3".

Also the noise is governed by the right foot. I can go thru the gears and it sounds quiet, but if I am starting off from a stop sign pulling my trailer I can make the exhaust bark a little. I do watch for people that are close so that I dont offend them too.

Rick

Mine was straight piped for about a year. Sounds cool 'till there's a load on it or the RPM's are ~2000. I lived in the farm country so noise was only an issue in town. The only time it was too loud was taking off from a light with a patrol car next to or behind me, or coming home late at night. Sounded like it would wake the dead.

I put my muffler back on because I'm in wooded residential area on top of a hill, now. It's about a half mile drive up, and that kind of noise wouldn't be tolerated too well here. (I'm TRYING to be a good neighbor)

I did drill some large holes in the baffles before it went on. (to reduce back pressure, and evict its new residents and their empty nut shells) Not sure what effect it had.

{Home made exhaust system works fine}

Home made exhaust system works fine for me, open for about two years how, sound good to me. Some people don't like it BUT to bad. Use parts from old system. Have to buy a few parts. I tell them if you don't like it roll your windows up, I get a few dirty looks BUT.
