Eight Months ago I removed the muffler and resonator to achieve the straight through sound. Loved the sound of the truck, but the in-cab drone at highway speed was driving me nuts. When I initially removed the muffler and the resonator, I only kept the muffler, and trashed the resonator. I recently put the muffler back on to eliminate the dreaded drone but miss the fabulous sound. My question is: Could I remove the muffler and replace it with a short direct flow through "Glass Pack" unit to sort of replace the resonator?? I dont want to go to my local $tealer and order another one. I'm hoping a glass pack unit will achieve the same results that a resonator would do by reducing the in cab drone?? Any advice from you guys is greatly appreciated.

I removed mine when it broke off at back of muffler but left the resonator on and it doesn't sound much different than stock. I used one of Geno's muffler replacement pipes. It will never have another muffler again.

I'm not sure how easily you could do this, but I saw better results in reducing or eliminating "drone" by placement of the muffler. I have the Jardine 4" system, and the magnaflow muffler. Like you, I wanted the deep, throaty sound of a straightpipe, but because I tow heavy, didn't want the drone.

When I first installed the system, I placed the muffler in the standard location. the drone was right there at 2000 rpms. So, after experimenting with the muffler or a resonator in its place, I moved the muffler forward toward the cab. That significantly reduced the drone and lowered the RPM where It "peaks" to about 1600RPM- a range I am not normally in for long. So. I guess what I'm suggesting is to try and move the muffler more forward to see if that helps. I know others have done the same with similar results.

Man, you should of trashed the muffler and kept the resonator!

The resonator is a straight-through, no restriction muffler. With it the drone you experience would be minimal.

Since your resonator is history, I'd go with a similar straight-thru design muffler. Install it in the same basic location the stock resonator was, which is about where the cab/bed join. That should do the trick! :D

Or find someone on the TDR that has a stock system laying around wasting space that they'd send to you cheap. ;)

I did the mufflerectomy on my Ram two years ago, left the stock resonator in place, and never had I wished I'd done anything different. Even the wife doesn't complain about the sound. In fact she says it sounds good! :D

Of all the aftermarket systems that I've heard, the mufflerectomy is one of the best sounding in my opinion. (I've heard a lot of aftermarket 4" systems, I won't mention any brands. Some of the owners wished they'd kept the stock system and straighpiped the factory muffler and kept the resonator).

I believe a few people have tried these 'mufflers'. They'd be the first thing I'd try if I had a drone to get rid of... . they're pretty cheap... and readily available.

I doubt one of these would have gotten rid of the drone from my 5" stack, though. :-laf

jrhodes WHat mph and RPM are you talking about. I ran straight 4" with the suplied glass pack for some time but it was killing me. Then I added a muffler from Janetty Racing and it cut out alot of the drone. It still drones prety bad between 62 and 68 mph. Gets painfull after a while. Go slower or faster its perfect.

Bodybomber:

I used to get the drone sound anywhere from 1400 to 2000 RPM. I got so tired of it, I put the muffler back on which has removed the drone sound and the kool sound I had when it was straight piped. You see my situation, I want the kool straight piped sound but not the drive me crazy drone sound in the cab... .

I have the walker 22572 muffler that Jannety supplies with their systems, it has no drone and plenty of great noise out of the tailpipe. I bought a used tailpipe and pieced together my own four inch system.

I've read about persons with no resonator or muffler getting rid of the drone by welding lengths of angle iron lengthwise along the exhaust pipe. This should change the resonant frequency of the pipe. Experiment by clamping lengths tightly to the pipe and giving it a test drive.

I know it sounds really odd, but I do think it works to kill the drone.

Me, I still have just the resonator and haven't had any drone problems.
