I'll say any improvement (reduced EGT) would be minimal by just dropping the muffler on a stock system. Your noise level would obviously increase. The sound may be pleasing to your ears, but I've considered an unmuffled Dodge/Cummins pickup diesel to be kind of ratty sounding, similar to a Farmall tractor.
A greater reduction in EGT would be gained by a replacement free flow system, 3 1/2" pipe smoothly formed, and a free flow muffler to knock off the "rats".
I've had a JRE modified Banks system with a Walker straight thru muffler on my '92 with serious fueling, and got about 100 deg. reduction after dropping the Banks "free flow" (not) muffler and having Ted J improve the plumbing. This was after an injector and pump upgrade, and "earnest" fueling.
By the way, if you're hotshotting, the system change may be the way to go, as the "rat" may become annoying after a while.

Old school, I'm running a 4" mandrel bent system now. But muffled. Thanks for the reply my friend. Mike
