I've changed the fuel filter many times on my stock 01.5 2500 without any surprises, but this weeked there were two. Due to limited driving, the filter had been in service for 24mo/15K miles. The in-tank fuel pump was replaced 2 years ago when pressure at the banjo fitting just before the VP44 started getting too low at WOT. That brought the pressures back up to acceptable numbers (>16psi idle, 13psi WOT). I have a 16 psi gauge that is pegged except when exercising the right foot. Now the surprises:
1. The fuel filter was almost impossible to remove and the new one was equally difficult to insert. This is the usual part from Geno's, although it has been in my garage for 2 yrs. (sealed of course). Nothing looked out of the ordinary - no debris or water in bottom of housing. Maybe need to lube the washer at the bottom of the filter with some diesel first? Never had to do that before, and removal was equally difficult.
2. After replacement the fuel pressures were lower than before by about 3 psi. I can't see how post-filter pressures would be lower with a clean filter.
I'm concerned that I'm missing something here that I will learn about on the side of the road. Thanks for any insight.
