2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission 4X4 Problem

Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Clutch advice needed

In the last 2-3 months I have had this problem happen 4 times.

I was leaving a parking lot after having lunch , outside temp was about 80. I go to give it some throttle and it bogged. I then lifted and throttled it again and it was fine. It has done this twice in similar situations. It reminded me of when a carbed motor loses an accelerator pump.

Lastly I just returned from a 1000 mile trip , we had driven about 4 hours and took a short break. Truck sat about 15 minutes. Got back in started it and got back on the highway. Well while cruising the truck seemed to have lost power, and throttle response. I gave it more throttle and it came back to life. It did this twice in about 10 miles and then was fine the rest of the trip.

Today I will check the fuel pressure because my first thought is a problem with the FASS. I recently had high flow injector tubes installed and have noticed a rougher idle (sometimes) . I will also see if I have any codes.

I really hope it isn't the FASS , I purchased this to eliminate worrying about that damn lift pump. The truck just turned 60,000 miles

I understand that without fuel pressure numbers and or codes it is pretty hard to diagnose ,but just wanted to know if it has happened to anyone else.

Well it is definitly going into some sort of "limp" mode and whatever it is , it's getting worse. It did it 2 times on the way home from work today.

I got home and did a little investigating.

The only code that is up is 1693.

I drained the water separator.

I also checked my fuel pressure. since the gauge is under the hood I can't get a WOT reading.

At an idle it's a fluctuating 18#s

Power braking it up it will got down to 13/14 #s

I then took the truck for a ride and it did it once, I tried to pull over and check the pressure when it was happening but the problem corrected itself .

I plan on dropping it off at the dealers tomorrow.

If the pedel is dead then it is a tps or vp44 going out. Mine would do if ocationly too. You would just have a fast idle. Mine is the vp44.

I seem to be having the same problem. I have almost the same symtoms, after the truck sits, starts fine, but when I try to pull out into traffic it feels like I have no fuel. Pressure is about 9psi under what should be acceleration. If I pump the pedal, power will come back sharply. If the tps is easy to replace I might start there. Let me know what the dealer says. Thanks

you should get it scanned,1693 =dtc detected in a companion module. it should have other codes that will not show up on your trip odometer display. what you are describing sounds like the apps sensor going bad. Chris

Well it's at the dealer now. I've got a really good dealer with an awesome diesel mechanic (he has a bombed 2nd gen) so hopefully they will find something. Still have 40k on the warranty.

Hopefully I can get ahold of Brad (FASS) and find out what is up with the high and erratic fuel pressure at an idle.

Just got off the phone with the dealers diesel tech. , seems to be another VP bit the dust. Hopefully I will have the truck back in a couple of days.

I don't know if anyone has been told this but he told me to unplug the EDGE for a few hundred miles to break the new pump in.
