Here's the 2003 TSB from the TDR "Site Features" TSB list. TDR only shows it for the 2003.
"03-004-04 2wd 2500 140. 5" wb Axle whine.
This bulletin applies to 4x2, 2500 series, 140. 5 inch wheel base vehicles equipped with diesel engine, sales code ETC/ETH, and an automatic transmission, sales code DG8. The problem is that some vehicles may exhibit rear axle whine at speeds between 35 and 70 mph. The repair procedure involves identification of the pinion flange and propeller shaft that the vehicle is equipped with. If a repair is necessary, the propeller shaft is replaced using the chart listing the appropriate part numbers. "
As you can see, I have a 3500 not a 2500, and mine was replaced under this TSB. Before the repair, I had the "owl hoot" noise (GREAT description!) at low speeds, and particularly when cold, but also at other times as well. Finally the dealer confirmed the noise at about 50 MPH when the truck was warm, and performed the TSB under warranty.
I've driven about 6,000 miles since the repair, and I STILL get the "owl hoot" noise at low speeds when the truck is cold. I took it back and left it over-night at the dealer, who confirmed the next day that the truck was still making the noise at low speeds when cold, and that this was NORMAL, according to the dealer. "The parts have to warm up when you first operate the truck, and then the noise will go away," I was told.
That SEEMS to be the case, although it's the same "owl hoot" I had before. I don't know if the dealer is correct or not, or if they only get paid by Chrysler to fix it once. However, I have an extended warranty with $50. 00 deductible, so if it has to be fixed again and I lose the "warranty" argument, I'm still out only $50. Still, since the repair, I no longer hear the noise after the truck warms up.
