This may seem like a st range question but how is a guy supposed to change the oil in the new 6 speeds? Do you have to pull a PTO cover off... there's no drain plug?

Boy does that seem like a stupid design... any ideas why?

I just bought a new NV5600 I'm installing in a first Gen truck. I bought it new from Dodge(great deal I might add) & when I tilted the transmission on its side, oil came out the rear so I'm assuming they've either filled it or they've lubed everything with enough oil that it should come out before I fill it. Either way it would be nice to pull a plug & check without having to make a project out of it!

What is the gear lube of choice for these?

Thanks for the info.

Just pull the bottom bolt on the PTO cover. It drains thru there. Be sure to put a little Permatex on it before putting it back in.

YUP - the "drain plug" on the 5600 is any of the lower bolts holding the side plates on - they are at the lowest point on the transmission, and no real need to provide any additional plug...

Not a bad idea at some point early in the transmission's life (10 to 20K miles) to pull the cover(s) completely off and check the sump and magnets for any wear-in debris tho'... ;)

I did that with mine at pretty low miles, and found noticeable microscopic brass particles suspended in the oil - nothing to be alarmed about, just normal wearing in of parts, but I still prefer to do an early drain and refill...

I just drained the oil in my 5600 at about 5600 miles :D

I removed the left (driver's side) PTO cover after letting the oil drain through the bottom bolt hole, with the truck pointed slightly downhill. There was a lot of brass powder suspended in the lube and some ferrous particles and chips on the magnet in the bottom of the iron case. You will get better access to this magnet from the left side cover. I replaced the cover with a left side one from a NV4500 that has a magnet on it, ultra black rtv sealer. The pto cover bolts came with loctite on them, now they have rtv on them.

I made a funnel to refill from a copper 3/4" street elbow and a 3/4 to 1. 25" copper adapter from Lowe's. I cut off the street elbow at an angle, and the 3/4 end off the adapter. I then pressed the street elbow through the hole in the adapter and soldered them together so the "funnel" part tips outward and the 3/4" smaller OD end goes into the case's fill port. Snap on makes an adapter from 3/8" drive to 17mm hex for the fill plug, #CPT-110A. Autozone carries the lube at $5/qt in yellow Pennzoil bottles.
