Bought a '99 2500 quad cab, 4x4 w/ cummins in Nov '07. Was in good cond. , one owner, 101000 mls. , stock except for an old performance chip. Replaced old chip last month with a new Edge chip. Been having a little issue recently with the trans shifting up & down - cleaned battery terminals, helped for a short while - then read on forum about aluminum foil trick, thought i'd try it. Went by carwash today to spray off engine compartment. Decided to unplug Edge chip just to see if by any chance it was creating the shifting problem. Immediately when I started engine the check engine light came on. No engine power to speak of. Ran fine, changed gears ok, just no power - even if you pushed pedal to the floor. Pulled over, plugged chip back in - truck ran fine. Ideas, suggestions, advice ----HELP! Anyone out there had this happen? Know why?

Thanks, Randy

Sounds like the truck went into limp mode. Did you connect the MAP harness correctly?

As for the TCC lock un-lock thing I feel the best way to solve that is by running the APPS ground straight to the battery ground. You will need to cut the black wire with yellow tracer coming from the APPS.

Any chance you can get us the code that set the check engine light? I can't remember if the 1999 model can get the code from cycling the key swith on and off three times?

Went out to see if i could get the code by the check engine light. Unplugged the chip then followed procedure always did with my '96 gas Dodge -- started engine, ran rpms slowly up to 2000, let down slowly, cycled climate control through all setting then back to off, turned off engine. Then the strangest thing happened, when I turned the key on/off 3x the check engine lite went off and stayed off -- no flashes/codes - nothing. Test drove truck, ran fine but still felt a little sluggish -- although i can't remember exactly what it felt like before I put the Edge chip on it.

As to the MAP harness (what is it?) being connected correctly, the dealer that I purchased the chip from installed it for me. Would the grounding issue possibly make the torque conv. feel like there was some slipage?

Thanks for the input.

Randy

ps --I'm new to the cummins world. Always had Dodge trucks, but the '99 and now my '08 Sterling 4500 are my first diesels. Are there any good Cummins books I need to get to learn off of?

If there is a bad MAP (manifold air pressure) input to the ECM (engine control module) then you will get the afore mentioned "limp mode".

Try pulling the connection off the MAP sensor and cleaning it. The sensor is located to the rear of the fuel filter below the #5 injector line. The wires are connected by a simple "clasp" type barrel connector. You probally have moisture in the connector.

Member TTTM has a diaghram that shows the location of the MAP in the 'First time owners' thread labled "where is it" or some such title in the "stickys" that are at the top.

Good luck! Welcome to the site!

Randy,

This is usually a bad idea with all the sensitive electronic components under the hood. A little moisture in the wrong spot (just about everywhere) and it's headaches for days. I love having a clean engine bay in my truck, but spraying water in there is one thing I won't do!
