I've had my 2001 for a whopping 1. 5 months now.

If I am not pulling anything there is no problem.

When I have my 5ver on it and i shift from 6th to

5th I get this strange sound. It sounds like wheel hop

if that makes sense. Has anyone else had a problem

like this ?

Thanks

Pete

Sounds like you may not have your timing down right when down shifting with a load on and your flexing the drivetrain and getting the trailer to move around in the fifth-wheel plate.

Looks like a your new to the site, welcome aboard and do us a favor and activate your signature so we know exactly what your driving. You'll get more responses that way.

YES, EXACTLY THAT NOISE

It sounds exactly like your tire while at highway speeds, is rolling over lines or something. I can get mine (it's repetable) to do it from 6th to 5th or 5th to 4th.

I've come to believe it's something to do with the turbo. I know it's not the tires because the tempo or rythum it has never changes. I'll be doing 40 on a down shift yet the sound makes it seem my tires are still spinning at 65! I think maybe it's something to do with the wastegate popping off.

My . 02

I can kind of agree with you about maybe not shifting just right

but after I get into 5th and get back on it and everything is loaded up again you would think that sound would go away?

Only time it goes away is when I lift.

I am VERY glad to hear I'm not the only one with this problem.

I thought it was the waste gate at first also but I'm just not sure. Also, I really don't want to take her to the shop, guess

it's a matter of trust there.

Anyone else have this same problem ?

Well I took her to the dealer. Had the 5th wheel hooked up

and the diesel mechanic and I went for a ride in the mountains.

Naturally it didn't make that sound but it did get close!

We stopped and he tightend 2 bolts and said it was fixed. ??!!

The told are on the pipe leading From the pressure side of the turbo leading to the intercooler. there are 2 clamps there.

Those are what he tightend. I'll let you know if it worked.

HOPE IT WORKS

I can only get on line here at work so I'll be anxious(sp?) to see if that did the trick. Monday morning I'll check this thread. It just might do it 'cause I still think it's the turbo causing the noise. - just don't ask me how...

I let him tighten them up and I took her

for a spin. It "seems" to have fixed the problem!

I have a trip I'm taking the camper on in a few weeks.

We'll see what it does then.

THANKS for the help and ideas!

oh, p. s. sorry for the extra post.

I get the same noise, not always associated with shifting: boost always high (18-20), climbing under load. Sounds like tires over concrete cracks spaced very close together, like 3 or 4 per second. Stops when I back off.

Could this be wastegate related?

Leo

It is exactly that sound.

Mechanic said he has seen a few make this sound and it

was the 2 nuts (see above) or the wastegate.

He said it could start flapping open / closed.

He wants me to drive it and see if it still happens.

if it does he will look at a turbo replacement.

They can't replace just the wastegate, have to replace

the whole unit. I guess that is ok, it's not my money! :)

D/C doesn't even have a part number for the wastegate

but he said cummins does. makes no sense... .

I'll let you know what I find out but it is nice to know I'm

not the only one. .

Mine does (did) that same thing EXACTLY. Sounds like a tire getting ready to blow, whop, whop, whop, whop etc. I think it was the intake tube getting sucked somewhere. Key word here is *think*. I pulled the air intake so the lip is inside the air filter box. Hasnt made that sound in 5000 miles. Dunno if it is fixed or not but I had to try something LOL
