I am working on a 96 2wd auto w/no engine or trans modifications. In the mornings or after it has sat all day when you first take off in drive it will go to shift to 1st and then it acts like the trans is completely out in all gears, including reverse. If put it back into park and then go back to drive it is fine and has no other problems unless it sits for the day. I do not notice any slipping in any gears locked or unlocked except for this problem. Has anyone else experienced this or have any ideas?

Thanks!!

:) The trasnsmision has a temp sensor in it that will wait for the trans to get up to a certain temp before it allows it to shift to the next higher gear. Mine wont shift up from 2 ond or 3rd until I have driven it for about 2 miles in normal temps. If it is realy cold outside it can take much longer. This is also part of the deal if you have let it sit for a couple of days. The longer it has sat and the colder the temps the longer it takes for it to shift normal.

Just my 2 cents.

These trucks have a problem with fluid draining back from TC and can be really weird when cold. Sometimes they won't go right into gear. Try warming up a couple of mins in neutral so fluid will flow.

my 47RH has been doing this for 110,000 miles. once you get used to sliding it into nuetral while it warms / Builds oil pressure, you won't even notice it... Pat

Check the gearshift linkage adjustment. Mine was a little bit off when I got it back from a transmission shop. It wasn't far enough off to allow it to start in anything but park or neutral but it was off enough that it wasn't shifting properly.

TV cable adjustment is also important.

I tried putting it in neutral, used to doing this with my 95, but it did not make any difference. If I take of in 1st and manually shift up it seems to be ok, just does it on initial take off in drive. I will check the TV and linkage adjustment.
