Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Strange vibration

I have been having some vibration at certain speeds and rpms, none of which are really consistent, sometimes it does it sometimes it doesn't. I am concerned about that, they usually appear at speeds lower than 25 and higher than 60 in various combinations of gears and rpms. any ideas guys. I have also been hearing an intermittent high pitched whistle sound loud, and definately not the turbo, comes from under the truck, . I am completely new to the cummins trucks but i don't think these things are normal

You can do a search on these forums on "vibration" you'll get more information and ideas than you ever thought possible. Most of us have some kind of vibration that we can't eliminate; The 3rd gen guys especially but I have one at 70mph to 75mph. It feels like it's in the rear driveline somewhere but I can't nail it down.



Have you lifted you truck recently? Do you hear the vibration or feel it? Where do you feel it (seat or gas pedal)?

truck is stock all around, just no muffler, stock airbox with k&n filter, 265 tires, i feel the vibration in the steering wheel and seat and floorboards, basically anywhere i touch the truck i feel it when it does it. you can hear it a little.

Would help to know year model and how equipped. If it is a manual transmission it could be a bearing issue... ... hard to say.

it is a 2002 HO with 6 speed, extended cab long bed. low options, no performance mods to speak of (yet anyway)

Me again, man you've posted everywere today! You said the truck was new to you. Have you checked all the fluids underneath? Check for any silver particles in the gear boxes. Another idea is a sticking u-joint, if one cap dries up and galls it can cause all kinds of weird vibrations, usually under load or decelleration. Jack up each corner and rock the wheels, there shouldn't be any movement side to side. If there is, see were it's coming from. I posted alot today because it's raining cats and dogs and we didn't have to work today!! WOOHOO, no money for me! Hope this is of some help, Greg

it has been raining here too. Between college work and rain i can't get a break to check everything. I plan to do a full inspection this coming weekend with a fine tooth comb. I am mainly worried about those really expensive components like clutch, wheel bearings etc.

if you've got a spare body (like a friend, not a corpse!)that can help, lay under the truck watching u-joints in the front and rear driveshafts and at the transfer case. *WITH THE TRUCK IN 1ST GEAR ON LEVEL GROUND, PARKING BRAKE OFF AND WHEELS CHOCKED A COUPLE INCHES FRONT AND REAR* Have someone stand on one of the rear tires and roll it back and forth, you'll see, hear and feel any loose u-joints

I checked everything that i was told to. Wheel bearings are fine, so are u joints. any other ideas for me guys, i am getting concerned now, and need all the help i can find on this one, biggest problem for me is that this truck is my primary form of transportation, i guess all else fails i can still drive my rusted down beat up car (74 charger) but it really irks me since i have only had the truck for a little over a month

I finally found out what was causing my problem. I checked the u joints for loose and sloppy behavior the other day. Couldn't find any play so i decided to take it into the dealership today. It turns out the middle ujoint of my rear shaft basically self destructed. Rust locked up one side and the pins went out and the cab started breaking, i'd say if i hadn't taken it in today i might have had a rough trip back to school on monday. I make a 300 mile round trip to school, my best guess is that it started going when i felt the vibration the first time and worsened especially over this last trip to school, i definately did not see any broken components the other day.
