I just got a new toy for the truck yesterday and it is the neatest thing i have had in a while. It is a color GPS for navigation while driving. It even talks to me to tell me the way to go. If you do a lot of traveling, i think this to be a must. Tells me average speed, current speed, stop time rest stops, gas stations restaurants, etc. Absolutely amazing.

I finterested in getting one, I know of a good vendor. jsut bought an additional one for the motorhome today. Ebay is the way to go ont hese. Discount online stores aren't so discount.

I'll post a pic of it tomoorrow.

Hey Wade, sounds like a really neat product! Can't wait to see the pics. Prices?

BTW, it's been a long time since I've seen you post on this BB... nice to hear from some of the other long timers from time to time. :D How do you like your new CTD powered motorhome?

Wow, if you could mount it in a blow up doll, it would be just like a wife telling you where to go. Turn here, turn there, you missed your turn... ... ... . blah blah blah... ... ... . I want one... ... ... how much is it??????????:D

I use the Rand McNally GPatlaS - available at most 7-11's for $10 or less.

My wife's Jag has the nav system. Biggest problem is database updates - PITA and $$.

Wade

I have had the Colormap Streetpilot mounted in the console for approx 1 year now. It is fun to play with on a road trip!! We bought the 2CD software that includes all US roads down to the subdivision level. I highly recommend that you obtain the largest chip (I think they sell them up to 132mb) . Don't mess around with the 8mb and 16mb, as they will not hold much when you start downloading data in prep for a trip!!!

Also you should get the remote antenna, unless you plan to keep it on the dash

Bob

John,

the motorhome is nice but gets traded in next week. Not big enough. we are getting a 42' Monaco Dynasty with the 400 CTD. Should be cool step up. No more exhaust brake. Actual Jake brake. We are going to hed to the coast Friday morning and hang out for a couple of days.

Bob,

i actually mounted it on the dash and it really is some good tape holding that thing on. I plan to use it mainly when i am on ling trips. I bought the 128mb chip right off the bat. i talked to a few people and the 32mb doesn't hold a thing. I was able to upload all the maps for my trip to Kentucky next month. it is the coolest toy.

And Nps,

if thrifty and frugal is the way for you, dump the chrysler and the jag, get a couple of neons and buy yourself one of these cool toys. Who has fun looking at a map?

Anyhow, i am going to try to shoot a pic of it on the dash tomorrow and post it. forgot my camera today. If anyone needs a good vendor for these things, I have an excellent guy i found off of ebay.

sounds awesome!

You sure know how to live Wade!:cool::cool::cool:

Wade, not really worried about thrift, just time and efficiency. Can buy a new map and plan a route in less time that it takes to program the Nav system with a destination. But I'm always the last one to buy new toys.

Glad you enjoy yours.

:D

Nps,

Not a problem. it actually is more of something to keep me entertained and "geekin" when driving the long trips.

It would also seem a bit easier to setup trips on the computer and take the chip to the gps. How does programming work in the Jag?

John,

Here's a pic of the new coach. this isn't the right color but can get it from the web.

Wade,

Programming is with 4 function keys and a 4 quad arrow key. You begin with an alpha/numberic display and have to arrow/select begining with either a street address or town name. It tries to be smart by narrowing the selection of letters/numbers, but it flat out DOES NOT work if the address is a state or county road number. That is fine here in the east where everything has a name (sometimes even two or three :D) but out west becomes kind of a big limitation outside of the city.

Has 5 or 6 CDs for total US coverage and new/updates are $200 per CD. I've bought 3 (needed so my wife could drive from Wash DC to Indiana) but the level of detail is inconsistent. I live in the country and the map for my area shows the farmer's driveway across the street from my house, but in Indiana (near Wabash) wouldn't show anything under a state road level unless you were in a major city. Go figure - 3 CDs to get to Indy, and only 3 more to hit the left coast. Guess that is why there is more detail at home huh? Also kinda PITA to stop along the road to drop a new CD into the trunk-mounted nav player when you reach the end of the world according to the last CD. First time it happened guess my wife had momentary heart failure when the screen went blank, but dropping a new CD in brought it and her back to life.

Because of the power consumption and the time it takes to program you have to have the engine running for it to work! Makes for some long idling sessions before a trip.

Don't know where the database for these things is built from. Can't believe there is more than one or two for all the various apps (microsoft streets and trips, yahoo maps, gps systems, etc. ).

Really seen some interesting things while nav'ing. About 3 weeks ago rode with my wife to ft. lee virginia. Programmed the nav in case she needed to make the trip alone. South of DC are some bi-directional express lanes on I 95 that come into the city in the morning and reverse flow in the afternoon. We were driving in them and it sent the nav sytsem buggy - kept saying to take every exit - guess it didn't know about the lanes. When we got within 10 miles of ft lee (driving on I 295 south around Richmond) it kept showing the car about 100 feet off the roadway and would attempt to correct itself every so often. My guess is the database for that quadrant is off by a second or two.

Another interesting anomaly - in Frederick MD there is a stretch of road that is technically US 40E , US 15S, and I 270S all at once. The nav system calls it route 40E but none of the major road signs posted around the interchange where they all split up list it as route 40 anymore because it is electrically I 70E. Another stale DB entry?

My experience with the thing is that if you really need it, it will fail on you or confuse you, thus it is not really ready for 'lifeline' status. My wife took the option so she would be more confident driving when away from known territory. It does not fulfill that goal.

Otherwise it is kinda cool doing a 'look-ahead' to see how far the next milestone is when on the road.

Your thoughts - is the jag system that bad and is yours ready to be more than a toy?

You hit the nail on the head!! Wonder if they will ever become what they advertise? Probably not until there is a national dadabase of road construction/closure/ and restricted hours of use AND be able to download off satellite. I'm sure the next generation will have something like this, till then, we always consult a map and be prepared to adapt.

Well, it has a tremendous toy feeling, but I think can be very useful. First of all, programming is very simple. It is all done by PC if you like, or on the console itself. To set the trips it is a matter of just clicking on the highway if you know which one. You can enter addresses and it will ask you if you want the quickest, shortest, or easiest.

As far as the maps go, the North amreican continent is divided into 10 DCA's as they call them. You will recieve 1 with your purchase of the gps and can unlock more if you like. I chose to purchase the unlock codeas for all DCA's. you load the software on your computer, and then plan the trips. With the use of the tutorial, it was very easy. What is nice is once you own the codes, you can undate the maps as they come available. You can also update the software on the actually gps. There are two inputs. One is a meg card and the other is the serial port.

Programming has actually been very easy these couple of times i have used it.

I don't know if i would bet my life on it. Yes we too have a road similar to what you talked about. I-84/Us30 are the same road through most of the Columbia River gorge, but in certains spots it 30 exits off and travels through towns. i have seen it having a hard time distinguishi9ng betewwen the two when they are a couple hunderedfeet apart.

I feel that if you have an idea of where you are going, have read the directions a couple of times and can have a map showing you where you are, it can be a bit more helpful than just a map, but i still have a road atlas in the trip!!!
