Competition Strength of the Dana 70??

Attention: TDR Forum Junkies

Thanks, TDR Staff

Competition Who's going to Redding CA?

Competition BBD For sale??

I'm not going to argue that the D80 isn't stronger, or if I found one for cheap I wouldn't throw it under the truck.

My point is that I don't feel the D70 is the boat anchor a few people claim it in. I had honestly not heard of a shaft or R&P breaking in a D70 until now.

In the off road world, the D70 means serious buisness.

I broke the pinion in my 70 a few yaers ago at the Schied pull, I had to drive home 1700 miles in front wheel drive. Btw I have a arb airlocker for a 70 if some one wants it.

Lessons learned in this thread:

1. Dont sled pull with a Dana 70

2. Sled Pulling is harder on parts than Drag Racing.

3. Some people still dont know any better..... and probably never will :-laf

Nate, let me help your post out a little, it will make better sense:

"In the GASSER off road world, the D70 means serious buisness. (or Ford PSD)" :-laf

Nothing is foolproof, or bulletproof, but I wouldn't spend alot of money on a locker for a Dana 70, or even rebuild it for that matter.

However, there is no sense in changing something until it breaks, eh? :D

I really think alot of the axle problems are a midwest thing. Outwest the pull videos I watch the tracks are either dry or more of a sand mix. Here in the midwest they must make them out of super glue. I figured I would break my ring and pinion soon enough(seen it too many times sled pulling) I figured I would upgrade while I had a D70 that wasn't broke that I could probably sell for say $450-500, versus breaking it then having to spend $250+ to get it back together to make it worth the $450-500.

It might be a gasser thing, but you can't tell me a big block with 44" tires at WOT bouncing off rocks isn't hard on an axle.

Take the same truck, hook to a sled and see how long it lasts.

i watched a guy snap the R&P in a D70 twice pulling, in 2 weeks. but i know another trd member who i pull with made 12 hooks with about 535 rwhp and not break.

Maybe the west coasters are making them live because of the WCCF.

400 HP is not that hard on parts.

I have yet to see a rock climber at WOT. I'm sure I am missing some great entertainment!!! :-laf

I had a book somewhere that listed the torque limits and specs for Dana axles. I can't seem to find where I put it though.

What's the ring gear size on the D70, how about the D80?

Whoever posting about the 2wd breaking the rear, I can see that more than a 4x4, since ALL of the power is going to that one axle.

Anyway, my truck is for daily driving and pulling my trailer. I don't plan on pulling sleds any time soon.

Well, I called Jeff Garmons shop, and the person that answered the phone said Jeff's race truck had been running a stock dana 70 with LS for years without failure. . I guess I'll take my chances for now. .
