Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Stripped starter bolt

What is the best way to remove the bottom starter bolt that has been stripped. It looks like it could be drilled out, should I try to grind the head off first?

I take it you stripped the bolt head.



Try using a vice grips on it first, if that doesn't work then you mite have to drill it out. ( If you have to grind the head off take off the starter try the vice grips on the bolt itself before drilling. When I broke heads off water pump bolts thats how I got them out. )

Better way

If you have a Sears near you, they have these reverse thread sockets that will grab onto stripped bolts and back them right out. The set is 50-60 bucks but you can take it back after you use it or buy a smaller set, they work great, that way you don't have to mess with a drill and tap. Worth every penney, of course I took my set back, so it was a free tool rental.

box end

Have you tried a box end 10mm wrench. Especially if you have to hammer the wrench on. Those bolts are pretty small and you have very little access to them. I can see a socket slipping very easy. A box end wrench will grab and hold unless too much metal has already be stripped off.



I think I would grind the bolt heads off, remove the starter and then extract the bolts.

The first time I ever heard of bringing it back was when I bought a Moen faucet tool at Home Depot. It was $22 and the cashier said, "you are going to bring it back when you're done I hope, we only have one".

Got the bolt out with the sears socket. Ordered new starter contacts from Larry B. This is a great site. Thanks for the info.

I'll come to my own defense

No I wouldn't teach that to my kids, but I am a college student and my options were very limited at the time. I had to get the thing fixed, I would have kept the set except for being low on funds. But I agree I don't recomend that either, it was more of a joke not a serious recomendation, the only set that had what I needed was pretty expensive and though I would like to increase my tool set, I couldn't keep it.
