... . does that mean fuel pump leak at 11K miles? It is not the breather smell but strong diesel. Anybody have this? George

This smell also occurs on a diesel if you recently changed your oil. I personally dont know the technical reason why, but I'm sure some here does.

You should beable to tell the difference from the new oil change smell and the diesel smell.

I think you'd be very surprised. I think most people that think they're smelling diesel or exhaust are in fact smelling the breather. . I mean it doesn't smell like popcorn - it smells like diesel too. In any case, there's always a slight possibility you do have a fuel leak - so pop the hood and look over the cp3, injectors, lift pump, and fuel filter housing. .

I have had my truck since last August and I have always smelled that diesel odor when I stopped at traffic lights, until it really warms up. But, Fortunately for me, I really Enjoy the smell :D .

thanks gentlemen... I used to smell the breather smell and laughed when I saw Dodge's cure... a little bottle of fragrance to put in the oil! I know there is a thread that kills the vent holes for the crankcase smell getting into the cab. Now I am glad I had not done that because this is diesel fuel. Real bad at stop lights, engine idleing. I was thinking that there was a pump leak issue somewhere (mine a Jan 9 04. 5). I will study it as well. Right now the neg terminals are off as I finish welding up the aluminum flatbed and side panes. Thanks again... George

Every once in a while, when the wind is just right, I'll get that little whiff of diesel smoke that comes drifting into the cab while at a stop. What a beautiful smell!! :D Get's me all excited about the truck. ;)

I am at 12K or such. The early smell WAS breather fumes. This is raw diesel. My 04. 5 has an exhaust smell nearer to propane than diesel because of the cat. George

I had the same thing happen to me today. got out at work and got a good smell of raw fuel. found out it was a injector line on the fuel rail 2nd from the back of the motor a turn of a wrench did the job for me. good luck

Engine combustion effeciency is not 100% so the exhaust contains some vaporized raw fuel and can at times smell like fuel. However, when in doubt check it out. Since spilled diesel does not vaporize like gasoline, you (or your mechanic) will see evidence of a leak. Just my not-a-mechanic 2 cents worth.

I had this happen to me with about 30 kilometers on the truck and took it in a couple of times. The dealer tighted a clamp on the turbo and sent me away. Well I brought it back a couple more times and they finally replaced the turbo under warranty and I've never smelled raw fuel since and I have 100,000 kilometers now.

Dang. Mine has done it off and on for 7 years (Jan 04) since new. Never thought to complain... not sure why. Wonder what the issue is with the turbo? Wonder if that is why my mileage is so marginal.

Check the bottom bolt where the CP3 Pump is fastened to the engine

for a possible fuel leak. My 2003 is on the 4th pump in 90,000 mi. it

still leaks in the winter time.

I just read on another thread that the CP3 has a tendency to drip a little fuel when the ambient temp is around 40 or lower... was news to me, but it explains why I smell fuel every once in a while on mine, and sure enough, it is only when it is 40 or less. ??
