Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Stuck in 5th

My friend has a '98 5 speed. While driving home the transmission got stuck in 5th. Sounds like the linkage came loose. He said it doesnt look like it has a linkage he can get to. Any suggestions. The stick moves freely but will not come out.

There is no linkage, it is a toploader. He could have possibly broken the bottom off the shifter. Have to pull the top cap to find out.

Thats what we were afraid of. Do you have to pull the transmission to get to it or is there an inspection plate?

I don't know about the cover, but if you remove the boot I know you can remove the shift lever.

Yes, the transmission has to come out. and if its got a stock clutch, replace it. you will be very unhappy if in six months you have to do it all over again...

The shift tower is easy to pull off with the trany installed to inspect that area. 5th gear is in the tail housing, which can also be removed for inspection with the trany in place. If a shift rail got stuck and the lid has to come off then you will for sure have to pull it out.
