A used AC compressor IS the way to go. A pressure switch to run the clutch makes the kit work the best. Them things have enough air flow to run a good impact. The ones I've seen are old ND compressors that have thier own oil or exchange it with the oil in the crankcase. Neat idea.
If you cannot do that, I have a large tank that my air compressor dumps to. I use that tank to run my air horns. But in a pinch it will air tires and run air tools. But with this setup, you must be patient.

While I was living in Mexico some of my ingenous mexican friends carried a long air hose with a lock on tire chuck on each end. They used this to "borrow air"from one tire to another on the same rig or from another rig that had "extra air". A rubber tired piece of road machinery parked on the side of the road was a good place to "borrow extra air".

Another benefit of the onboard compressor is being able to use it to air up your air mattress when camping. The piece of hose that illflem mentioned works good for this to, you can air down your tires and air up your mattress at the same time.

A winch and a anchor of some sort.
In a desperate measure with my Jeep I once buried the spare with my lug wrench under the tire and my winch cable connected to the tire iron. An old log laying around will also work and then you do not have to dig it up if you "basket" a strap around the log.

Another thing I've learned from experienced off-road racers is the value of a hi-lift jack. Your standard Dodge jack won't do the job in deep sand or snow, or if you get high-centered. You'll need something that will lift the wheels (front or rear, take your choice) at least 8-12" off the ground in severe circumstances. Then, you can place those chain-link fence sections, or whatever you have handy, under the drivers, and motor away.

IMO, a winch is good in terrain where you have a good geographic anchor (tree, boulder, etc. ) to hook to, but in pure sand or snow, I wouldn't be without the hi-lift.

For any of you "mudders" reading this: I am reminded of a friend of my Dad's... Had an FJ40 Landcruiser (the old Jeepey-looking one)
w/ a winch... . got stuck in some "gumbo" and vacuum-sealed the chassis to the surface of the mud... The willow trees (2) came up by the roots, and Fred still needed a tractor (owned by the same guy who owned the trees #ad
#ad
) to get loose... . be sure your anchor will out-resist the vehicle's stuckness.

You especially may need a fire extinguisher if you are trying to re-seat a bead far from a tire store and you use a little too much bead re-seater! #ad

Hey, where can I get some mudflaps that say "Bardhal Adativo" ??

Larry,
Are you talking about the mexican trick of using gasoline vapor and a match to reseat the bead? #ad

ROTFLOL!!! I've done that with a smaller CAT 'dozer - hooked it to a tall stump, and unwittingly pulled it out! #ad
Since that was my original plan, I wasn't too unhappy, but the CAT was still stuck in the swamp! Hopefully, I've learned my lesson #ad
