Stuck Mag-Hytec Pan Plug

Well once again I over tightened something (trans plug) and now I can't break it loose. I broke off a 3/16 ths. bit trying. I have thought of heating the pan area around the plug with a heat gun and then cooling the plug itself with a dry ice cooled piece of round stock then trying it again. Any other thoughts would be appreciated. I don't want to loose the pan trying but would sure like to get it out. Thanks to all for your ideas. Larry

I had the same problem the first time that I serviced my trans. I ended up using a heat gun and a 1/2" impact gun, 1/2" to 3/8" step down adapter and a 3/16" hex key socket. Adjust the setting on the gun to its lowest point as to not strip the plug. I used an IR231 which has adustable torque settings. If you dont have an impact gun you could use a breaker bar for more leverage. Make sure that the hex key is properly seated in the plug. Hope this helps, good luck.

here's what you can do and its worked for me a lot of times. take a large punch and rap the plug with a hammer against the punch. you got to hit it hard but remember its aluminum then use a very good hex wrench or better a hex socket sears got them. this works for me almost ever time. make sure the hex key is all the way bottomed

Mag pans use a #30 torx for the plug, try that.

Mag Hy-Tech Pan

I thought about giving it a good whack or two with a punch and hammer before wrenching on it and using an impact gun as was mentioned starting soft and gettting harder as it goes on. Mu pan uses a 3/16 ths. hex bit as confirmed by the instructions that came with the pan. This is an early application (2003) and perhaps now they use the #30 Torx. Keep the ideas comming I can use them all. I don't want to drill out the plug unless that is the only way out. Larry

Hammer style impact driver?

You can try the Hand held Hammer style impact driver to loosen your stuck plug. Sears sells one in 3/8 drive and not that expensive. I would use a top quality bit in a socket. This driver is great for small engine, motorcycle and marine repairs. Hope this helps.

I did it too and Jerry @ Mag Hy Tec (I think he own the company) told me to use the punch method and gave me a new plug. It works really easy, You'll be suprised.

You might just drive the truck untill the fluid and pan comes up to temp then give it a try. I wonder if we should be using anti-seize on these plugs. I think I will next time.

I will drive it to get the oil up to about 160 degrees then use the heat gun and the punch and the frozen round stock. I have a 3/8 drive impact gun I can adjust. I will use the anti seeze should have those many years ago being the steel plug in the aluminum pan. Thanks to all that have responded and if anyone else has any ideas just keep them comming. I answer is to use a in. lb. torque wrench and torque as specified. If you do that you won't have any problems.

No heat required using the punch method. Just be sure to punch it to the left of center to cause it to rotate counter clock wise.

I used an inch pound torque wrench when installing mine. I am having the same issue though, I ordered another plug to replace this one once I get it removed.
