The transmission on my truck lost 5th gear back in the summer. We took it in to have the transmission rebuilt (with all the 5th gear upgrades/patches). Got it back the first time... it went into 5th and stayed there. :( Got it back the second time... it pops out of 5th whenever you have a long stretch where you aren't giving it any fuel (i. e. , down a big hill or off ramp). Got a call from the transmission place today saying they worked on it, but now it's getting stuck in 5th again.

Besides suggesting that I really should have just gotten a transmission from Standard Transmissions to start with, any other ideas? (I now know that one, but the local shop handles of fleet of trucks with this transmission, and they came highly recommended... ) Has this problem happened to other folks before? How'd you fix it?

The dogs on the synchro ring for 5th gear can come loose and lock it in 5th. Gitchesum had this happen on his truck after a 5th gear repair.

I suggest you have the transmission shop order the 5th gear countershaft gear/syncro clutch assembly,( dogs, springs, and all) from Blumenthal's Heavy Duty, as well as the two snap rings that take the place of the original thick snap ring. The parts are not very expensive. Or find another transmission shop that can recognize & replace the worn parts.

Tom nailed it.

The stock snap ring on my 5th gear syncro assembly is what broke on mine the first time. when it breaks, the entire 5th gear syncro assembly slides so far on the countershaft, the only reason it doesn't fall off is because it is being pushed up against the rear teail section case. It also causes the countershaft to eat the gear out of the 5th gear clutch gear and that feels just like you lost 5th gear.

I went cheap and just bought the clutch gear. Don't do that. Buy the whole assembly.

Mine stuck in 5th gear again after I installed the new 5th gear clutch gear. It was the syncro struts hanging up in the 5th gear hub.

Here's what happens when the snap ring breaks.

Here's a pic of the tail section without that gear in place.
