Went to start truck after releasing ignition switch, starter continued to turn. Turned off ignition and starter still continued to turn. Cycled ignition switch and starter finally stopped turning. What is the problem, is it the starter or a relay somewhere? Thanks, Jeff

It's usually the solonoid. Do a search, there is a place that will sell you a repair kit for about $40. In the mean time, remove the starter and remove the cap from the solonoid. Clean the disk (it will be obvious) and the contacts and it'll probably work for a while.

Its the contacts in the solinoid and they can be bought any place that rebuilds starters and alternators for about $15. 00

Starter

Thanks Guys. Crawled underneath the truck to pull the starter looked like an easy job. This was until I found the two multi-point bolts. I went to get a socket and was told that I needed what the tool man called a e-socket. I bought a number 16 e-socket and couldn’t get the socket and ratchet on the bolt. Can I use a 12 point. box end wrench and get the bolts out? Next question the truck has a 107000 miles on it, I can get a lifetime rebuilt starter for $200. 00 is it worth rebuilding the solenoid or should I just change the starter?

Thanks again. Jeff

As I recall the starter bolts are 10mm 12 points.

I would do the repair yourself for now. Put the money toward something that makes smoke!

Jeff,

These contacts aren't rocket science for sure. The bolts have 10mm 12 point heads. There are three of them. A box end wrench does the job. Or a 12 point socket. I take mine apart every so often just to check the points. One contact was starting to get bad so I made a replacement out of some copper I had. Pretty easy. It's been working with no problems for over 40K miles since then. In fact, it looks better than the other one. Maybe the piece of copper from my junk pile is better stuff than the original. Who knows? Anyway, nothing to spend very much money on unless you let it go.
