when putting the head back on,would it help to put a couple of studs in the block to help line it up with the dowel pins? :)

I didn't/don't. It's easier to drop the head in without messing up the sealing surface on the head if they are out. There isnt' much room there in the back.

I know some guys do it, I just find it easier to get it close, and use a couple of extensions for the last 1/2 inch.

when I did mine, I was by myself. I didn't want to damage the new gasket. I put the gasket in after I had it all lined up and used a couple of studs to guide it down. It worked well for me.
