Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Stumbling?

Hi!

I am a little confused. I have read numerous posts about problems with the lift pump but I am uncertain about what the driving symptoms are?



Just recently, with 115,000 showing on the odometer, my truck seems to stumble, shudder and have trouble accelerating from 1,500 to 1,600 rpm. In the higher rpms, it seems to act OK. What can I check to see if I am having a problem with the lift pump?

115k miles on the original lift pump? If so, you're on borrowed time. I'd replace it even without checking the pressure/volume if it were my truck.



Check the pressure at the inlet of the VP-44... anything less than 15psi at idle would be uncivilized.

I cannot stress the need for a fuel pressure gauge for our trucks. With out one you will never know if something is amiss until its too late. @ the cost of the Lift Pump and the Injection Pump you'll be lookin @ a $2000. 00 parts bill. :{ I think the cost of the gauge setup well offsets the cost of the two pumps

I hate to say, but with that many miles, it is a miracle your truck is still running and the lift pump is an original. I agree with the above posts, get a fuel pressure gauge (mechanical only), a new lift pump (from Cummins, and I guarantee you will need one), and plan on spending a significant amount of money on a new injection pump. If you check the computer for codes, I would be willing to bet you have one of the following codes p0216, p1688, p1689 with regard to the engine stumbling. If you do have any of these codes, an injection pump is on the horizon for you.

I just had to replace my LP today at 43,000 . Took it in to get a low fuel pressure idiot light put in . They checked my fuel pressure and the pump was going bad i had 6 PSI at idle . I had no signs but after learning about lift pumps here i had to do something . I would get your fuel pressure checked.

Check codes before you throw too much money

Check for codes before you throw too much money at it. I'm all for replacing the LP if needed and definitely having a FP gauge. However, narrow down your problem. You may be having a sensor problem (i. e. map sensor etc. ) 2 cents.
