First time I have done a post and could not

get an answer.

If the rear wheel sensor is bad ,does the

speedometer have to act up.

My speedometer is working fine but the

ABS lights are on. I will take it in on Monday,

so I will have an answer for us .

I didn't answer because I didn't want to give bad info mainly because I wasn't sure of the change over date. Most speedos run off the transmission, but earlier models run off the rear end.

Speedo pickup is on the transmission. Axle sensor is for antilock system.

That is my understanding anyway.

Illflem I did not want to leave my truck at dodge. Was wanting to just get the sender and put it in but from what I have read most of the guys were having eratic speedo readings.

What I would really like is to know is if I can read the sensor with a meter. It has been raining for 2 weeks straight , and these duallys empty are scary ,with the antilocs. Thanks RJ

illflem,

I was under the impression that it is the other way around... .

Newer trucks run off axle sensor and older trucks run off the transmission/x-fer case. At times I wish mine were newer since I could use one of those nifty boxes to recaculate my speedo for larger/smaller tires... instead of using gears... .

Matt

well... . i too know nothing more than how to read up on them :D

i can give it a stab. have you tested the system and pulled the codes out of the RWAL module?

the connector is under the dash its a 16 pin data link connector to the left of the steering wheel. the good book says to momentarily ground pin 13 (the black wire) i can post the codes if you need them.

the sensors send a variable voltage (analog) I have to see if i can figure out how to test them.

did you know, you can go to the chain type auto parts stores and leave a deposit to rent a scan tool (DRB II scanner) make sure they have the module for our trucks too.

I had to replace the sensor on my '96 2wd a year ago. The speedometer was not affected at all. The dealer charged me $73. 50 for the part (I installed it myself).

nope

in a 97 sensor for speed is in the transmission, its called vehical speed sensor, i know i had to replace mine, not sure but i think sensor in the back is for you abs????? just my . 02

My '98 12 valve runs the speedo and ABS off the rear end. My cousin's '97 runs the speedo off the transfer case and the ABS off the rear end. So '98 is when they chagned it.

... that's weird since they changed the interior in '97... . you'd think that the newer style gauge cluster would have similar interfaces and input devices that the '98 has.....

Matt

RJ2, I have the 'same' truck as you... you'll find the problem is the ABS sensor in the top of the rear diff... about $37... a Dodge-only part. Not a biggie, and it's a 'normal' go-bad item.

Changed mine

had mine go out right after I plugged into my 5th some time ago. Called Dodge and they wanted $150 to change it!!!!LOL

I bought it, under $50 and installed it by hand, without looking, all by feel in 5 minutes.

Needless to say, i'll never go back to ANTIOCH DODGE again!!!

I got the sensor and installed it , the lights are still on .

I think I am going to have to take it in tuesday and have it checked. The abs fuse is good. I hope it did not get the computer. Thanks RJ

maybe you missed this before, so here it is agian :D

you can go to a auto parts chain store and rent or borrow a scan tool. you leave a deposit for the amount of the tool ($300 +/-) and get it back when you return it. use this to determine what the codes are and to monitor the system.

I also told you how to pull the codes out of the rwal controler.

the ABS system is kinda protected from our general knowledge but I bet we can figure it out :D

Have you done any wiring work under the hood just before this?? In routing some new cabling I lifted a ground for the ABS servo and upon restart the light was on and stayed on - even pulling the fuse would not reset it. went back to what I had done last (WIDL hypothesis - What'd I Do Last??) and found a wiggly ground lug. Retightened and restarted, problem sol-ved. Apparently if the ABS can't see all circuits involved it sets a fault.
