On my 2017 Chassis Cab, the DEF filler is separate between the cab and bed. I like it, height is good for emptying 2.5 gal jugs. Just ordered DEF filler cap lock from Genos.

We have a lot of fun poking at ourselves and each other, especially the simple things. The first DEF I added, I didn't turn upside down to add, held it sideways. Took so long, and I hadn't fully extended the DEF hose. It came out, so now I'm getting the fluid off my cab and bed paint and the chrome steps.

Learning is fun here.

So, have a great day,

Ron

correction, one diesel shower, one DEF shower. Both the first time and were lifelong lessons.

I dont count the one at a Shell station that the auto stop was broken and didn't cutoff. Luckily I had finished cleaning the windows and was right there to stop it.

Cheers,

Ron

If you think relocating the DEF fill port to under the hood is a good idea you haven't looked at the DEF tank location on the GM trucks. THAT should be a crime.
Ever think about trying to dump a 2-1/2 gallon jug while under the hood, No thanks.

Haven't ever spilled any diesel while fueling. Maybe you'll get it next time.

I can't believe they are still building them like that! I had a well known, respected "diesel guy'' tell me to look at the Duramax when I was shopping for my 2015, when I saw the location of the tank and the fill hole, I immediately stopped looking at them. It struck me as an "oh sh*t" engineering moment, as in "Oops! We forgot the DEF, where we gonna cram it in?" Unbelievable!!!

I have never experienced a diesel shower while filling the tank; Ever

I never had either on a pickup. Filling my 5500, you actually place the fuel filler horizontally and level. The filler hose makes a 90 about a foot in travels almost level about 18 inches then makes another 90 and goes through the frame into th tank. It was a while after I bought it too as the dealer actually filled up the 52 gal tank when I bought it.

When the tank is 32 gallons and you are hitting headwinds and double towing at 70 getting 6.8 mph the extra couple gallons is WELL worth it!

Ron, I feel your pain on just having 32 gal. I have two friends both with 2018 Ram 3500 4x4 max tows who I can't talk them into buying aux fuel tanks. I dont mind stopping...bladder only good for about 2hrs anyway.

Cheers, Ron

I don't like the price, but this is my likely course.
they're proud, but good investment. you dont like in bed aux fuel tank toolbox combo? about $800 at Northern Tool. I upgraded to 1/2" fuel line with shut off valve at aux tank. 60 gal aux + 52 gal standard = 112 gal. :D

Well, I haven't ruled it out, nor have I ruled out having both. First, I need to make up my mind, and get a truck ordered:rolleyes:

Ive not ever needed more capacity in terms of running out of fuel, but it would be nice to be able to be more selective about when and where you buy fuel while on the road. Ford upped their fuel capacity to 48 gallons fuel and 7.5 gallons DEF, so its definitely not out of the realm to expect a larger reserve from the factory.

You took two diesel showers? I'm sorry but that's funny!

I fill until it clicks off, no mess and the extra fuel isn't worth it.

Doing the clickety click click thing adds like 1/2 gallon and possibly fuel down the side of your truck. I guess if you run out of fuel 3 miles from the fuel station it might be worth it. Better fuel stop planning perhaps.
I live in rural North Dakota and you still can't drive more than 25 miles without running into a fuel station. Yeah, maybe in the desert somewhere but planning and minimum of 250 miles per tank.

I get well over one gallon filling to the top after the click.

Its interesting the DEF gauge on my truck. It holds 9 gallons, so before I had my surgery almost three weeks ago, I ran my DEF down to where gauge is just in the red, appearing to be 1/4 full. I added a full 5 gallons to bring it to the full mark. Good to know what you really have.

112 gallons of fuel and 9 gallons of def gives me about 800 miles of range. Gives some selection on price of fuel, but more important, gives me range after I get to a national park or destination.

My previous 2009 Ram 4500 used an old factory lift pump to transfer fuel. Forgot it once and ended up blowing about 20 gallons of diesel out the vent anti leak valve of the stock 52 gallon tank. Made a terrible mess and the anti leak vent valve is integrated into the tank. Needless to say when I set up fuel transfer on my new 2017 5500, I upgraded from 1/4" to 1/2" fittings and use manual gravity feed. I've thought about an electric valve switched in the cab, but the manual ball valve works fine and easy peasy.
