Stupid Fan clutch LHT Nut Frozen solid, need advise...

Well the clutch is locked solid and driving me crazy on the highway. I have tried on three seperate ocasions to get the SOB off. I've tried everything I have found on TRD from the proper wrench, wrenchs on the 10 mm nuts to attempt to keep the hub from rotating, pry bars wedged between the 6 small bolt, air chisel, etc... . I can not get the damn thing loose. My last shot will be to get a bettwe air chisel that isn't about to fall apart. Am I missing anything here? I am aware that it is a reverse thread(just incase anyone was hoping to throw that one out there) . How the hell do I stop the hub from rotating? One would have thought the engineers at cummings would have put a hole in the pulley or something to help lock it in place..... Any advise or smart @$$ comments are appreciated. Thanks!

I bought a wrench kit from NAPA that had two thin open end wrenches and a long bar with a pivoting arm. The end of each arm has a notch that is made to go over a pulley bolt. This may be the same tool that you are using. I am sure you have sprayed down the threads with penetrating oil for several days. I would hate to use an air chisel and risk damage to the bearing in the shaft.

try using a oil filter strap wrench the ones that have the leather or rubber strap and wrap that around the pully this is how i helped a friend do it hope this helps and like JDKammin said use penetrating oil pb works the best just my 2 cents good luck

How the hell do I stop the hub from rotating?

Mike, spray some PB penetrating oil on the nut,leave it over night if you can. take a drift punch and a hammer and give the nut a good wack,put a pair of large water pump

pliers on the shaft behind the pully to hold the shaft,now put the wrench on the nut and it should come loose,[left hand thread]

I have a hub wrench kit that works with my air chisel. Couple of jolts and off it comes every time.

If you put the wrench on the nut and then give it a good wack it will come right off ... . If not put an air chisel on the edge of one of the points of the big nut at an angle that will cause it to rotate clockwise when you pull the trigger...



Last resort ... . heat the big nut with the cutting torch till it glows dull red...

the wrench will now get it off for sure with ease.....

What I used to do was put the wrnech in the hub nut, and hit it with a hammer straight down. It doesn't seem to make sense, but if you hit it hard straight down, you will break it loose without the hub turning! Good luck.

Keep in mind the clutch nut turns CW for removal while looking at it from the front. The clutch nut threads over a hub on the pully with a LH thread.

I Cut The Fan Clutch Shaft Off Infront Of The Nut With A Hacksaw, Then Took The Bearing Off The Block. Used An Impact On The Back Side Of The Bearing, And Held The Fan Clutch Nut With A Wrench. I Went Forward And Back A Couple Times And Then The Nut Came Off.

I made a crazy looking thing out of a piece of 1/4" flat steel with a slot in one end and five holes drilled to fit over the heads of the fan bolts. With it in place and a 23mm end wrench over the big nut, it comes off easy.

Nice wrench, if nothing else works, last resort before torches use a die grinder and grind one or two relief cuts (just till you see the shaft threads) on opposite sides of the nut, this relieves the pressure on the nut and then it can be taken off with the wrench, last resort torches, or the hacksaw idea was a good one.

I had trouble with mine also and a whack with a hammer wasn't going to do it. A member here named CPFF offers wrenches that hold the hub by the bolt heads. He is also responsible for the dowel pin blocking fixture and bolt. He is a vey nice guy give him a PM if you wan't a wrench.

I was "keeper of the KDP kit" at one time.

Those wrenches are a work of art!!!!
