So last Friday I popped the valve cover to check my valve lash. All is good there. Apparently when I re-used the re-usable gasket I got it hung up on something.

I would venture to guess 3 quarts of oil lost starting from the back of the valve cover, down the side of hte motor, behind the bellhousing (no clutch slippage... ... )down and out of breather hole on the underside of hte bell housing. Coated the transmission, exhuast and anything else in the path of the wind under the truck. . Even got the chrome side of the bumper, my initial tip off that something was wrong, or atleast "what the heck did I drive though?!?!).

So, at 10am I'll see if one of the 2 20mile away napa's that carry Amsoil has any in stock. Just do a complete oil change and filter.

Wonder how many cans of engine cleaner I need for this clean up.....

wow, that sucks hope everything is ok.

wade did that same thing only left the return line from his bypass hanging where we didnt see it and started the motor, oil went everywhere to say the least.

confirmed. gasket got pulled out of the groove. SLIGHT cut. everything pushed back together well. I may use some RTV just in case in the area. . Infact if you don't look super close, you can't tell it's cut.

I tell you what, I am HAPPY! that this is the problem. :-laf

GF's being the greatest. going the extra miles to get some oil from a non-so-local napa. no one seems to have the donalson or amsoil AE filters. but they have amsoil!. heh. So I'll get an oil change, but the filter won't. I changed the filter about 1000 miles ago as part of the "change filter and one quart of oil) oil change practice.

napa (atleast this one) doesn't carry the 3rd gen gasket.

Oil changes are so simple on these trucks, you can do them at night in complete darkness... ... right... ... Well I was one night... .

Drop the oil, plug the hole, pull filter, replace with filter, fill with oil, start motor.

Well, I had my trouble light checking for leaks and sure as poop, oil splatter EVERYWHERE!. no more then 30 seconds I'm sure. HUGE puddle on the ground. Newly paved asphalt too.

Oil was coming from the filter area so I pull the filter and scratched my head thinking "Why are there 2 gaskets on this oil filter?" I check the old one and it's missing it's gasket. Now I check every time. The gasket tends to get stick on the filter housing on the motor. :)

That was about 1. 5 gallons of oil on the ground.

You only do that once. I did it with my old Toyota. Started it up and crawled underneath to get my oil pan and there is oil leaking all over.

Sure enough two gaskets. And that was the last of my oil. I'm sure glad my Dad was home and brought me some more oil.

That's a fact. In fact the last filter didn't come off with it's gasket, I checked. :) heh. tho in the last 11 years since I've been changing oil in my cars and trucks. hasn't happened until last year. sure took it's time to catch up with m
