Does engine oil break down the plastic in a gallon milk jug?

I usualy pour my used oil into the quart containers from the new oil, to take to the recycle center, but holding a pan with 12qts in it and pouring it a quart at a time is very tedious. I figure if I use empty milk jugs I only have to do it three times, which is alot easier.

Also what do you guys do with your water/fuel/crudd mixture from fuel filter change and drains. I have acouple of Mason jars in my garage with it but cant figure out what to do with it.

What about used antifreeze from flushing/draining the cooling system?

ANy thoughts, comments, suggestions etc with be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Before I got this truck I used to pour used oil into gallon milk jugs. No problems.

Now, my 11 quarts of used oil drain into a 16 qt. capacity container I bought at an auto parts store. I just haul that to the recycle center to dump.

Autozone takes up to 5 gallons of used oil at a time. I use the old 1 gallon bottles the Delo 400 comes in. Milk jugs are OK if the lid is good.

Prime your fireplace logs with old or dirty diesel fuel. Not so "abrupt" as gasoline and promotes the fire longer.

I use an empty Delo 400 five gallon pail. You can find them at any logging site or anywhere else there is heavy machinery.

A few years back I picked up a nice 5 gal plastic container from Wal-Mart which is for Kerosene fuel. It's a white/clear type plastic material which gal markings on the side and has a gasket on the lip so it does not leak. Also has a carry handle. Works really nice for holding all my used oil, transmission fluid , gear lube and diesel from filter changes. When ever I take it in to be emptied they always ask if I want it back (guess they are hoping I won't so they can have it). I used to take it to a recycle center and asked if it mattered if gear lube and ATF was mixed with the oil. I was told no, it all gets pumped into a rail-car and then hauled off for use in oil burning stoves/heaters in shops, etc. Was also told synthetic did not matter either. Like mentioned most auto part stores will take used oil free. I was just in Checker Auto today and asked since my 5 gal kerosene container is full again and was told it would be no cost. Coolant is another story, Checker Auto does not take used coolant. The guy said once a year the city has a Haz-Mat day where I could get rid of it for free. He said to also check with the local Fire Depts, appearently some will take used coolant... ... . for what I have no idea, but I'll look into it since I have some of that too.

I use the Rotela jugs, but I am always short. (oil from the car and making a funnel that screws into the Cummins) I make it up with the windshield washer fluid jugs. A bit thicker and better caps than the milk jugs.

Our local oil change shop always takes all my oil. (usually 7 or 8 gallons at a time)

Do they have parties shortly thereafter featuring lots of ice cream? If so, that's probably what the coolant is used for, since anti-freeze is a prime ingredient in most ice cream toppings. Oo.

Don't laugh:-laf It's true:eek:

Tastes good, too.

I recently found out that on some coolant bottles it says you can just dump it down a drain - provided it goes to a treatment facility. I didn't believe it when the guy told me this, but I checked - and there it was - right on the bottle.

The diesel fuel and water can be mixed in with your waste oil. Haven't you ever drained out a load of motor oil that was full of fuel?

Steve

Yep, that's where mine goes too, right into the waste oil. It's easy and since it's an oil too, why would anyone care at a used oil drop off center?

I bought one of the new style oil change containers. Works great, drain oil into it and then screw on the big 20" wide top. put it in the truck and take it to autozone and unscrew the small pour spout on the side and pour it in the recycle container. I think they cost around $7-$8.

My wife buys laundry soap at Costco in five gallon buckets. That's what I use for draining fluids. The used oil goes in my furnace tank so there is no disposal problem. ATF goes in the furnace too.

I use a 5 gallon plastic gas can to "store" my old oils before taking to them to the dump to get recycled. I had to drill out the vent hole and removed the screen so the think oil would flow out faster.

Joe,

Your furnace is a #2 oil burner, not a waste oil furnace, right??

If so, how much have you safely added per tank of fuel oil?

Lynn

I don't really know. My furnace tank holds 280 gallons. My oil change interval is 5K miles. While I'm working I put about 800 miles a week on it so the oil change happens quite often. I've been doing this for about four years now with no sign of problems. I don't think these furnaces are too finicky about fuel. I don't even get any funny smoke from ATF poured in the tank when it's low. I'm not sure how often the oil guy comes by, but I think it is usually a couple of months between visits. Sometimes it has got pretty low and we had to call for a delivery. It doesn't get all that cold here on the northern CA coast.

Thanks, Joe. I like the idea of using the old oil, and this seems much safer than dumping it back in the vehicle tank.

I have a lot of used oil in my garage in 5 gal buckets. Problem is I don't have any lids and they are full. I probably have 40 gallons or so I have accumulated over time. I want to get rid of it but like I read above auto zone and the like only take 5 gal at a time. Any ideas where to go with this quantity and ideas on how to trasport it without making a mess?
