I have on of the Californy engines, where the oil has to be changed every 3,750 miles. Normally, whenever I change the oil, I also change the filter. I have only used the Stratapore filters put out by Cummins. Here's the deal... I needed to change the oil this weekend as it was due, but it turns out that my supply of the oil filters was used up. So to be on the safe side I changed the oil but obviously couldn't change the old filter, just left it on. My question (finally) is... since on the non-Californy engines you change the oil every 10k miles and leave the filter on for the duration, is it okay if I leave this filter on until the next oil change? I have to make a trip tomorrow of maybe 400 miles, so I can't do it until I get back. To play it safe should I just change it all again once I get back?

Thanks in advance...

Bryan

I don't think you will hurt anything doing this. The filter is doing it's job and you are right... ... outside Kalifornia, the recommended interval is 10K.

Bryan,

I don't understand the Cal. engine deal and shorter interval on oil changes. Can you educate me on this

Don

Don,

I have an '04, and at that time there was a Californy engine and another engine that everyone else got. Well, most everyone else. The difference is that the Californy engine has more smog control stuff on it. My understanding is that the soot builds up faster in the oil, so they tell you to change the oil every 3,750 miles or less. Then, story of my life, shortly after I buy the truck guess what? That's right, they come out with a single engine for all fifty states. So I get stuck changing the oil as often as on a gasser.

If your truck is an '04 and a half or newer, you got the engine that is good for all fifty states and has the 10k oil change interval.

Am not aware of any special time table of oil changes on My California HO 0. 5

engine except the regular PM schedules in my drivers manual. There is a great opinion concerning low mileage services versas extended. These HPCR engines do have a "sooting" problem supposedly due to the injection systems that does turn the oil darker faster, but does not seem detrimental to operation at longer intervals. It is my personal opinion that with more local use than highway use, the oil should be changed more often. These engines are produced with ample filtration. A little change in the PM intervals will not cause any due harm. My opinion only.

CPG,

Could you explain the part about how these engines are produced with ample filtration? Does the engine do some filtration itself? I always assumed it was all done by the filter. I have also heard repeatedly that diesel engines have to be kept cleaner on the inside than the gassers.

If you truck is an 04. 5 or later, there won't be any special CA time table for oil changes, its only on the ones built prior to that.

Bryan

BKunic, what I meant was the filter (oil) on your truck is very effective but only partial filtration (cleaning). There is a block by-pass that opens to allow the oil to go directly to the engine if the filter is clogged and not free flowing.

You seem to be very careful in the care of your truck so I would not worry for operating the way you do. You are doing fine. Some people are using secondary after market oil filters for extended use also. As far as engines being kept clean on the inside, thats what the detergents & additives in the engine oil is for, both gas & Diesel.

CPG,

Well, seeing as how it's going to be a loooong time before I can afford another one, I figure I had better take good care of it!
