Sub Woofer in Gen 3

I've searched the forums and not been able to find anything. I just upgraded the stereo in my '03 (finally). What a huge difference. I don't, however, like the sub sitting in a box on top of the folding load floor. I don't want to remove the folding floor as I use it daily. Has anyone come up with a way to put a sub woofer in a gen 3 without removing the load floor.

I don't think there is enough room with the load floor in place. MTX sells a box you can toss back there. A friend helped me build some enclosures with fiberglass and wood.

Try these Polk Audio db804 These speakers are some of the smallest sealed enclosure subs on the market; I used the older generation of these in my 96. Being a sealed box design you can custom make the enclosure box to fit in the cubby under the seats or even make the cubby the enclosure.

I talked to a guy at Al & Ed's Autosound about putting a sub in my 03. He said that they usually just put a single sub in a custom box under the center front seat.



Low frequency sound is non-directional so you really don't need to have a seperate sub for each channel. The only reason for multiple subs is for more volume and power handling capability.



I haven't checked yet to see if there is enough room under each of the front seats to put seperate subs in. If there is, you could put the subs under each seat and the power amp under the center seat.

I know about the MTX box but don't want to go that route as I really do use the load floor most every day. I've got the amp mounted on the floor to the rear of the load floor (below the rear seat back). The jack takes up most of the space under the front passenger seat. I suspect there is more then enough room to figure out something to go under the front center seat area. I've got the "cheap seats" so don't have a storage bin in that area to worry about. If possible I'd like to find something pre-made (like the center seat box for the gen 2's).

I placed a 10 inch sub in my center seat storage under the front seat. . All i did was make a top plate out of birch ply wood and set on the inside lip of the storage box. . I ran a bead of tuff as nails and it is as solid as a rock. The sub is a JL audio competition with a 450 watt mono amp. It sound better than two 18s, People don't believe its only ONE 10. .

I haven't done it, but thought about it. Could you take the jack and mount it behind the fold flat (under the back/ rear seat) and free up the space under the front seat??? I am not sure how much room is there, but it might have potential...



Good luck I am in the same boat, but I don't want to loose either of my center consoles...

Okay - I'm finding this encouraging. If one can fit a 10" sub into the center storage box then surely I can figure out how to get one under a center seat that doesn't have a storage box. I thought about moving the jack and perhaps putting the sub under the passenger seat but decided against that as I've run out of room behind my fold flat. Between my ham radio transmitter, antenna tuner, and the 6 channel audio amp, that area is pretty well filled up, leaving me no place to move the jack to.



I think I'll pull the front seat out and see if I can design something to replace that center section.



BTW - a few weeks back someone posted to a totally unrelated thread and a subsequent reader noticed that the poster had managed to get a sub into the back seat area without giving up the fold flat. I can't for the life of me remember what that thread was about and have been unable to locate it via search. I was kind of hoping that this thread might draw that poster out so we could see how he solved this problem.

Did a search on "free AND air". I remember reading that he had used free-air subs from kicker. Kicker hasn't made a free air sub in years. Not sure if he just had them lying around or what. Anyway, that's a novel idea.



I've seen prefab boxes from some of theese people for our trucks.

www.jlaudio.com - preloaded with a SINGLE higer-end jl audio 10"

www.subbox.net - single or dual 10" enclosure

www.qlogic.com - single 10" enclosure

Dave,

The jack & handles will fit under the rear seat behind the fold flat floor. You just need to modify or make a new mount.

Thanks but that wasn't the thread I was thinking of. The one I saw had nothing to do with subs or audio. It was something totally unrelated but in the posters picture you could see a sub under the back seat that allowed the fold flat floor to remain.

Awww shooot. Sorry Dale... I got a little excited. I've been trying to figure out what I wanted to do.



It would seem POSSIBLE to get a sub and keep the fold-flat. Have you talked to a custom audio place? A good one should be able to fiberglass you up an enclosure that would fit under the load floor. I want to fiberglass one up for myself, but I don't mind loosing the floor (which will make it easier to fiberglass. ).

Andy, thanks for posting those links. I was looking hard at that Pro Box, but I had some questions about it that I couldn't get them to answer. I looked at www.subbox.net and found out they were right around the corner from me, and I didn't know it. Ordered a 2-10" enclosure last night.

Awesome man! Be sure to post your thoughts. That's the one I was looking really hard at. If I fail miserably with my fiberglass project, I may go with that one. I've heard that the proboxrocks box is extremely hardcore. I don't need that much bass. Just some fill. Plus, I can't for the life of me figure out how it mounts.

It's bandpass. The subs hang out of the bottom and just sit in the wells.



I had planned to build my own box and what I had in mind looks just like the subbox.net enclosure. No need to re-invent the wheel. I'm going to stick a pair of JL Audio 10w3's in there so we'll see how it sounds. My Clarion VRX935 should be here today and I need to order my amps and components so maybe in the next 2-3 weeks I'll start installing.

Yeah, I kinda figured it was "bottomless", but I wasn't sure how it attached to the well? Do you just screw it down? What do you seal it with? Do you rip the carpet out? It was just kind of a strange design.



Those 10w3's should knock yer head off! I had a single 10w3 in my old truck with a small fosgate amp. It was hard to handle. I would imagine two may knock a door panel or two loose.

I have the Pro Box in mine. I have the 10 W0's instead of the w3's. I have been told by a lot of people that the w0's sound better in that perticular box. I am very satisfied with my setup. I also have Kenwood 6x9's in the door with a 200watt amp on them. The amp I have on my subs is a 1000 watt amp, although it is no where near turned all the way up.

You don't have to seal it on the bottom. The seal is on top. You drop the speaker in place and screw the plexiglass cover on. The large rectangle hole in the middle is the port.

BTW, I think it just sits in place. I don't think you screw it down, but I bet you could make some brackets to hold it if you wanted.

Hey guys I have a box that replaces the whole lower center section in my truck. . 88 cubic feet seaked, perfect for jl 10w6. Unbolt factory center section remove fold down arm/back rest. Bolt to new box which is loaded with sub. Bolt back in to truck looks like factory seat even with backrest up. Sub faces down about 3 inches from floor. Sub is then loaded which increases spl, no loss in quality.

Are you talking about a center section box for Gen3's? I know there was one for Gen2's but haven't found one for the new trucks. If so, where did you find it? Also, pardon my ignorance but what is "spl"
