Hey Guys,

Over the past month or two, I've noticed a slight vibe while driving at highway speeds about 65mph and higher. The truck has 62k miles on it. It got worse when I had rotated my tires, so I wrote it off as a tire slightly out of balance. After all, when I got the PJ's, the front ones took 1. 5oz and 2oz to balance and the rear took 11. 5oz and 13oz. After swapping them, I probably should have only expected it to get a little worse. This is strictly background information and I have a feeling it isn't related to the problem that I now have.

I was driving home tonight @ about 75-78mph on the Interstate for about 20 miles. I got off my exit and as I stopped at the end of the ramp, it felt like I had run on to some rumble strips -- or maybe the cut "noise" grooves on the edges of the ramp that are supposed to wake people up when they start to snooze. I didn't think I had gone over that far, but I thought that I must have. I waited for a couple cars to go by and then pulled out. Again, the same feeling as if I was on rumble strips. It happens under any driving condition now -- acceleration, deceleration, coasting in neutral, etc. The vibe is so bad between 5 and 10 mph that I'm afraid to drive the truck. Unfortunately, I'm supposed to drive it about 175 miles tomorrow.

So after reading some posts here, I get the truck home and decide to try to isolate it to the front end or the rear driveline. I jacked up the rear and put it on stands. I had the wife put it in 2nd gear and run it about 8mph. Sure enough, the truck was up there on the stands shaking away. I was closely watching the driveline. The (I think it's called) yoke that comes out the rear of the carrier bearing where it meets the u-joint at the front of the rear drive shaft was bouncing around quite a bit. I didn't see any out of the ordinary movement in the front shaft or in the rear of the rear shaft. The shaking is enough to bounce the transfer case and transmission around a lot. I had the wife run it slower, about 4mph, and there was no vibration -- I carefully watched the shafts turn at that speed and didn't see anything that looked bent either. I'm also sure that I didn't hit the shaft on anything today that would have suddenly caused this.

I had the wife shut off the truck and I crawled under. I pryed every way I could think of on the u-joints and cannot find any slack at all in any of them. If I grab the front and rear shaft near the carrier, I can move it around in the bracket, but I read here that that is normal.

So, I'm afraid to take my truck to the dealer because of my mods. I don't want my warranty voided over something like this. Hey -- I am my own warranty station! (unless it's something like brakes or a power steering pumpt, etc... ) :)

Anyhow, please help me get back on the road! Thanks!!!!

Just went through something very similar, turns out the middle U Joint was TOAST and the other 2 were close behind, takes quite a bit of prying to get them to move though. Look very closely at the caps on the center joint and you should be able to see some of the factory grease coming out. Let us know! And mine went from barely noticable to really bad in like 50 miles !!!

MHO - Take to a driveline shop let them evaluate (find problem for you) then decide if you want them to do it. Sounds like carrier bearing. Definitly wouldn't take it anywhere till you get it fixed. Good luck.

I did see some grease coming out around the caps -- also saw some on the front joints. Is that normal, or does that indicate that it's bad?

Just had the same thing on mine. U-joints. The one behind the center bearing was locked up tight. The others were not far behind. When I had to get new ones from Dodge to fit without grinding the shaft yoke, they were $90/ea. And when I took the caps off, some had very little grease in them. Probably why they crap out so soon, in addition to not being greasable. I added some high pressure grease before assembly. Exactly your symptom, rumble strip on decelleration. And I also couldn't move the joints by hand.

I just went through the same thing. Thought I hit the rumble strips when I let off. I wound up driving in about another 1500 miles before I figured it out. I pushed and pulled just like you did and could not find any slop til I pulled the 4 bolts out of the pinion flange. The rear joint was gone. I talked to a guy that builds drivelines and he recommended the Neapco 3-0803 joint. It is a hi-perf forged joint that is a solid cross that will hold the Cummins torque. I had to do slight grinding to get them in but smooth as silk again. If you are not comfortable doing it yourself, drop the shaft and take it to a local driveline shop. They should fix you up better than the dealer and for probably less money.

Okay, I read some more posts on here. I decided to take the truck for a spin -- about 8 miles @ 55-65mph. I felt the joints. Rear -- cold. Front -- cold. Middle (just behind the carrier) $#&)@#(* BURNED ME! ouch!

Okay, so I found the problem. Looks like I'm going to get some Precision 351 u-joints from Napa in the morning.

Thanks!

My drive line shop used Neapco, part # on box is 3-0188, also has a smaller label with "Spicer 5-188x" on it. Boys said these are the best to get for our rigs, way better then stock, and greasable too ! Oo. Oh, and John, why did you use factory replacements?? !! DS, take it too the shop first thing, I wouldn't take a chance , seeing how quick they got worse.

I just read that the Napa Precision 351 is rated at 150 horsepower. Uhhh... I dunno about you boys, but I'm pushing over 500 at the rear wheels. Anybody know what the Neapco/Spicer is rated at? And where to purchase it?

Thanks!

Never knew U Joints were rated for HP. . ds, try your local driveline shop, they should be able to get them no problem.

Problem resolved -- Replaced the three rear u-joints with Neapco and the three front with Spicer. All of the factory sealed ones were throwing grease. I figured that isn't good for a non-greasable "sealed" bearing. All six of the new ones have zerks. Now the only vibe I have is from the tires that badly need rebalancing! :)

Thanks!
