There a few things you can do. But first ask yourself how much money do you want to spend. And if you get to high in hoarsepower, you are going to want to think about an aftermarket clutch.

- Edge Chips makes one that is easy to install and gives you another 70hp & 220 on torque. it just mounts under the hood. I think that that one is about $500

-4" exhaust will help you with performance and economy. These will range from $500 to $1000

- DPP makes an item called a Turbo Air Guide that helps with turbo efficiency for $129

-Use synthetic fluids on your engine, trans, and diffs. This will also help with economy and the longevity of your truck.

-install gauges if you are going to run a chip. It will help you monitor your engine.

Guess I should of asked what you have. I am assuming a 04?

Hope this helps, be careful it is addicting. Let me know if you are interested in any of these things, I can help you out with the purchasing.

Thanks Kyle. I have an 04 SLT Quad Cab Cummins 5. 9. I love it so far and don't know if I'll ever be able to drive anything else. I might be interested in the chip. Does the chip help with MPG? Should I wait until I get the engine broken in before installing it. I don't want to install something that might void my warranty. Thank you for the help.

The chip does help with MPG. People usually report about 1-3 MPG increase, but a lot of that depends on the driver. Unfortunatly it does void the warrentee since you are giving the engine more fuel and power. I'm sure it won;t be too long until you hear someone on this site say "I am my own warrentee station". Then again I have seen warrentee work done on modified trucks. Also, you should wait until you have about 10-12k miles on it before you do anything like that.

If that is not something you want to do then maybe synthetic oil. You have a 3 1/2" pipe until just before the muffler then it's 4". You can get a kit that converts to all 4", which will help some. The TAG on the 03 & 04's has had some good results, some with MPG and more noticably spool up and lowering of EGT's and boost. You can then get in to air intakes, but I will stop rambling. Here are some links that may help you :

If you get the chip do not forget to install guages. More fuel = higher exhaust temps. You might see better mileage if you can keep your foot out of it, good luck! And yes any fueling mods will void your warranty.

I'm still getting used to the TDR terminology. What is "TAG"?

Also, regarding air intakes. Is there anything to these vortex air disks you can put in your air intake. According to the ads, they will increase your HP and fuel economy guaranteed or your money back. Thanks again for your help. I absolutely love my truck and don't know if I could ever drive a "gasser" again unless forced to.

Oops, sorry about that. It is the Turbo Air Guide, it is made by Diesel Power Products. It's a honeycomb looking disk that installs just before your turbo intake. The premise of the device is that it straightens out the air coming in to the turbo making it more efficient. Without it the turbo spinning will draw air in in a circular motion. I put one in my truck and the differences are subtle. But you have a different engine. Dave at DPP makes no guarentees but you can return it if you are not satisfied with the results. To me, it's worth the money. You may only see . 5-1MPG but the difference will be with spool-up and lower boost pressures. I think that answers the question about the vortex intakes; I am not an engineer by any means but having a "vortex" of air in a diesel is more harm than good has been my understanding.

Go to this website and it will tell you more about the TAG.

You may want to check around on this site some more to find out about experiences with it.

I do love my truck too. I would have a hard time going back to gas (it's just not the same!) as well. Even if I bought a car it would be a VW TDI.

Thanks again Kyle. I'm going to try to get some of the basic performance mods like this one done quickly. I'll wait until the recommended 10k on the chip.

I can't wait to get up tomorrow and drive my daughter to school again in my truck.

Sounds good, let me know if I can further help in any way. I am a dealer for most of those products also.

I wish I had a new cummins! I'm not dissapointed with my 02 though.

Yes, you should put at least 10k before using synthetics. It won't hurt the engine, you are just going to extend the break-in period since the synthetics are much more "slippery". As far as the rings go; I am not sure, to be quite honest. But I am going to have to say no.

Good luck with your 600!

Thanks very much for your response.

My question was predicated on the practice of not using even detergent oils—and certainly no additives—in new/rebuilt small aircraft engines until there was some wear to seat the rings etc. Doing so would mean that the engine would probably burn oil excessively for its useful life.

Sounds like the new diesel works on a similar principle.

I looked on the Web site yesterday and they are estimating a March 1 delivery date for my new truck. I did get more excited about it after I visited with a neighbor and saw his new 325/600 which is very similar to my order even down to the same color.

Thanks for the help.

JR-

You may want to post something in the 3rd generation forum about the rings. I am sure somone in there can answer that question. Your neihbors truck manual may also have some info on that. I sent you a PM with my email on it. I am an AMSOIL dealer, so let me know if you are interested when the time comes. Take it easy.
