I've now got 59000 miles on the stock Michelin LTX A/S LT265/70R17/E tires, and they've probably got 3000 miles left in them. They've been great road tires, but are practically useless in the mud/snow, so I'd like whatever I replace them with to be much better in the snow. That said, I drive approx 95% of the time on dry road, with the remaining 5% being in the ocassional snow here in East Central NM. I regularly tow a 10500 lb 5th wheel toy hauler.

I'd like your suggestions on what you think would be my best choice to replace the stock tires. Please include any additional info you'd think helpful.

Thanks!

FWIW, I just ordered 295 series Nitto terra grapplers to replace my 265 michelins - Around 175/tire

I will post when I get them on

HEY ! Glad to hear that someone else has good life out of factory tire's! Right now the '03 (305-555 6SP 4X4 Stock) which my Son seems to have taken a grate liking to, when last i saw it, had 41. 5k with 10k or so to go...

Tommygun, what are 295 series going to do for you?

Thanks in advance for info... not trying to take thread...

Taller tire = less rpm on highway... And a better look

And I really didnt want 315's... . Gotta be different ya know ;)

Does anybody have any experience with the Cooper Discoverer S/T tire? I'm looking at it as a replacement for the stock Michelins

SJBrooks:

I had those tires on my 02'. Recently got an 05' that came with BFG's. The tread looks more agressive on the BFG's but I really loved the Michelin tire. I seriously doubt I will get 60,000 out of the BFG's although someone might share their mileage in this thread. I am currently planning to replace these with Michelin's when they are worn out. In the past I have considered keeping tires for the kind of driving I do the most. In your case, 95% of the time you are on dry road and have 4X4 for the snow. You get more snow than we get here in Farmington, but I do travel to the San Juan's alot with my 12,000 lb. fifth wheel.

SJ,

You are in the same predicament I'm in, needing new tires. Only my truck has the LTX/MS. They actually do ok here in FL with the sand and a little clay mixed in. They are currently at 56,000 miles and I'm guessing they have at least another 10,000 on them. Great wearing tire. The tread looks like it could fill quickly in some real thick mud though... ... . And I have no idea about the snow. The tread blocks are siped but I'm just not sure how well they would perform. Maybe a non-biased person will chime in and help you with that info. on the LTX/MS.

Me (like many others) have tried every tire under the sun on my other trucks (Heavy Duty) and I always wind up with Michelins again. I just wish they were not so expensive.....

You may want to check out the XPS/Traction tire they put out. I know from hands on that they kick butt in the mud. But once again I'm not sure how they will do in the snow. They wear very long too but are much heavier than the other tires, IE: LTX/MS or LTX/AS.

There are lots of good tires out there... ... Hard decision I know.....

PM me if you would like specifics on the tires I have run.

Good luck.

AJ

I have 76000 on my stock mich. , but need new ones before winter. I don't like these for snow. But, all tires seem to be on backorder??? I was going to try some mastercraft courser ct's, but the one tire shop said they haven't been able to get them since around march or somehting.

I liked the wear i was getting but not need more aggressive tire. Nice to find aggressive tire that you can easily get 60k out of

Good STock replacements IMHO

Are the BFG All Terrain TA's in 285/75/17

Second set i have had and they are awsome, in my view the michelin's are good road tire but for anything else , they even spin or gravel, in snow theya re horrible.

got mine from tire rack althought they are D weight rated.

With our trucks, and considering that most D-rated tires will carry the same weight per tire as the E-rated ones, what are the implications/limitations of going with something like the D-rated BFGs mentioned above? Would it severely limit me as regards towing my 5th wheel?

To get the same tires or BFG's Check out the local tire store near your dealer. a lot of guys by their truck and go right to the tire store and change the tires out. Cheaper than new and good for another 60,000 miles

I ended up going with the Cooper Discoverer S/Ts in the stock size. So far, they seem to fit the need just right. I'll give an update when I get enough miles on them.

I didn't have much luck with the orig BGF's on my 04, due to the alignment problmes along with the toasted ball joints at 7,000 miles. My 04. 5 has the stock Michlins and they still look new with 14600 miles. I drive my trucks mostly I-5 between Southern Oregon and Sacramento Calif, with very little city driving. When the time comes, I would like to go with a 315/17 and a new set of wheels, unless someone has interest in a great slighty used set of stock Michlins and chrome stock wheels.

My experience is that the E range tires last longer. Even if the D range tires are weighted the same for weight you could end up spending more on them in the long run if you have to buy them more often. Also, an 80PSI tire is less prone to flats than a lower PSI tire. And as others have pointed out, higher PSI tires are less likely to roll the bead around curves. It comes down to saving money up front, or in the long run. I've love the Michs on my truck, with the exception of how they handle in the wet grass and mud. 55K on my original tires, and I'll most likely replace them with the same, despite the upfront costs. In Ft. Worth the difference was about $200--Discount Tire= roughly $700 vs. NTB's $900.

just put on some mastercraft courser ct's today.

Got 77,000 on my stock michelins with only one rotation, the fronts still had quite a bit of tread left, but with winter coming and with the rain lately the rear was down enough that I kept fishtailing even in 5 and 6th gear. so was time for some new ones. If the rears had as much tread as the fronts yet, probably could have gotten another 10-15k out of them. But, even as good of wear I got out of them, didn't like them in the snow, rain, grass, or mud. If I only did highway driving would probably of considered them again. No complaints about the mileage.

One note I wanted to mention, the first thing I noticed was how"unstable" the truck felt with the new tires. these are more aggressive type tire, kind of cross between AT and MT. similar to the cooper st tire. I think it is just putting so many miles on a highway type tire, not really any lugs or anything, and now these more aggressive tires with bigger lugs and seems to be a wavy feeling when running at speed down the highway.

I've had my LT33x12. 50R17 Mastercraft Courser C/T's for 12k miles and have been very pleased with them. You may want to tweak the PSI a little to get some handling out of them.

SJBrooks,

On my 2001 I replaced my Michelin LTX AS with Cooper Disc S/T 265/75R16 E rated Tires, They were great in the snow however I lost about 1. 5 mpg due to the more agressive tread, at about 35K they became very hard to balance and at best had 10K left in them. I will not purchase them again.

What gearing do you have/ and year of truck... . i'd like 295's but have the 3. 73 rear end and dont want to loose the snap..... and not getting a box just yet... .

You will not notice much of a drop... I had 315 BFGs on my 04. 5... the 6spd might help, but my mileage actually increase significantly once the RPMs dropped. I couldn't really tell much of a difference in power between the stock 265s and the 315s. I could still snort up any hill while towing (around 3k) with very little trouble.

2003 - 3. 73 axle - I figure the 295s should give me 150rpm on the highway (hopefully without giving toooo much more rolling resistance)
