I'm thinking I know what's needed, just looking for other ideas. We leave in 3 days with a loaded horse trailer for a 1200 mile (each way trip) to the Rockies and the newly freshened up 5 speed is making lots of noise in neutral after it warms up, sounds just like a throwout bearing, but it's new.

And it's very very hard to get into reverse. I've had to push it back a couple of times to turn around, unable to put in reverse with engine off or running.

I had a fully splined mainshaft installed (the old gear and nut were in new condition after 150k miles, but who knew) and installed a SB ConO about a 1000 miles ago. The problems surfaced immediately, but I'm working away from the home shop, driving 150 miles a day and haven't had time to pull the transmission back out to check anything.

The good news is I don't think it's gotten any worse, but also it's no better.

My guess is that even though I was very careful to not mess-up the throw bearing or pilot shaft bearing, something is amiss. FWIW, the transmission slid in and hooked up fine.

So, anyone have any advise, I really don't have time to pull things back down, I'm thinking overfill the transmission a quart and see what happens.

Thanks, RJR

overfill it... mine made a bearing noise after I had it out... didn't rebuild it though, just a clutch job... wasn't any harder to shift either... but overfilling it did get rid of the noise. good luck w/ it!

old bearings are causing the xmission to make noise. After replacing mine the hum went away. If your having problems going into gear it could be a couple of things. One is that the pilot bearing could be tight. The Hyd cylinder might not push it in far enough. Your syncros might be new? worn? ext. .

or the bolts on the output shaft bearing hold plates that mount from the outside of the xmission could be broken off or loose.
