I kicked a lot of tires in that time frame. The 3rd gen 3500 had several rear spring configurations. Early ones had an upper overload leaf. Later ones just 4 really heavy duty main leafs and the 2500 in the vintage had more lighter duty leafs.
That doesn't match my observations, which have been more than a few.
Every 03-09 I've looked at had the same spring configuration for each model: 2500/3500 SRW/3500 DRW.
2500's had a 4/1 leaf pack. IIRC it was rated at 2600lbs
3500 SRW's used the same 4/1 leaf pack pack, plus a set of upper overloads (IIRC 1300lbs comes to mind on them)
3500 DRW's used a 7% stiffer 3/1 leaf pack (2800 lbs) and the same upper overloads as the 3500 SRW.
In 2010 the 2500 and 3500 DRW retained the same spring packs as they had on 3rd gens, but the 3500 SRW went away from upper overloads and switched to the 3/1 main pack used on the DRW. That's the first time I saw a change in the basic rear sping layout since 2003.
Obviously I haven't looked under every truck, but I've seen a lot and they are all the same.
If you have any photos of a 3rd gen 3500 SRW with a 3/1 leaf pack and no upper overloads I'd love to see it.
