Camper Tie Downs?

First good tow in Colorado Mtns.

We left Vancouver on Sat. June 30 with 3700 miles on the truck.

We weighed in at 20750 lbs. with 5 people on board towing our 35-ft. triple slide 5er.

We traveled 2568 miles and used 231 gallons of fuel, netting us 11. 11 MPG for the trip.

Average speed in Cal. was 60. Average speed through Oregon and Washington was 65 MPH. I do get better MPG at 60 (12-13 mpg) than at 65 (11-12). 5 MPH cost me about 1 MPG.

The new HO pulls so much stronger and faster up the mountains than our 98. 5 24v. The 6speed is definitely the best choice for towing heavy RV’s. I only needed 4th gear 2 times, once around Mt. Ashland in Oregon and once up the Grapevine in California, but even in 4th gear I can do 50 MPH, passing every truck, camper and RV on the mountain.

My best tank netted us 12. 9 MPG and the worst was 9. 7.

We used CFN while in Washington and Oregon and Flying J and other truck stops in California. (CFN is high in Ca, so I do not use it while in Ca. )

Bob... nice report. With so few miles on your Ram, that is not bad mileage. Mine is still going up slightly at 37,000 miles. I will be towing my hay soon, and am interested to see what I get this year. My load will gross out about the same as yours.

The gearing on the six speeds does seem to be about perfect. I love mine.

Bob,

That's a really encouraging report since the 2002 we have on order will just about duplicate your rig, and our combined weight should be very close to yours. Glad you're pleased with the performance - hope we will be as well! :)
