I have an 02 QC. The plastic piece that keeps the sunglasses storage door closed recently broke off. So I went to the dealer and bought a new plastic door. I cant seem to figure out how to remove the old door. I dont want to push or pull in the wrong direction and break something off inside the overhead console. Anybody know how to remove the old door ?

Thanks,

TRat

It just hooks into a couple of loops in your overhead console and comes right out. Just play with it a bit and you'll see how it attaches.

The service manual wants you to drop the overhead console to get to the latches.

I replaced mine yesterday ($18 from an online dealer), and merely wiggled it around while pushing forward. It came out after a bit of playing, but I did break one of the old bin's "hooks". The new one snapped right in, and nothing else seems to have broken inside.

If I were to do it again, I'd probably take the extra 10 minutes to follow the service manual's instructions.

Thanks, I tried wiggleing the darn thing to get it out. But it doesnt move. So, Iim going to bite the bullet and have the dealer install the new door. Funny. One dealer told me $100 to remove and install the new door, and the other told me $30. BTW, I have the part, and the $100 is for labor only.

That's crazy... just pull the garage door opener holder, undo the two screws above, and pull the whole assembly forward about 1/2". Save yourself the money. That's like a dealer who wanted almost $200 to fix my map lights, most of it labor.

Thanks, Ill take a look at that. I coulnt figure out how to drop the assembly. (I admit to being mechanically challenged) I just dont want to break something else while Im trying to just replace the door.

Presuming your 2002 is the same as my 2001, here are the removal instructions from the 2001 service manual:

1. Disconnect negative battery cables

2. Open the garage door opener storage bin door and locate the two overhead console latch tabs near the front of the bin

3. While pulling gently downward on the front of the overhead console, push the latch tabs forward until each latch is disengaged from its receptacle in the inner roof panel.

4. Slide the overhead console rearward far enough to disengage the two mounting hooks on the rear of the housing from the mounting holes in the inner roof panel

5. Lower the overhead console from the headliner far enough to access the wire harness connector.

6. Disconnect the roof wire harness connector from the overhead console wire harness connector.

7. Remove the overhead console from the vehicle.

The above drops the overhead console assembly. To remove the sunglass bin, you then remove the 4 screws that hold the reading/courtesy lamp housing and move that housing aside. You should now see the sunglass bin's "pivot latches". Open the sunglass bin. Pry one of the pivot latches forward while pulling the bin's pivot arm rearward until the pivot pin is disengaged from the latch. Repeat for the second latch.

I got tired of replacing mine so I superglued small pieces of velcro on each side, works great and been working for about three years.

When mine broke, I fixed it magnetically. I found a pair of magnets, about the size of a dime, glued one to the holder and one the console. I took the tab that broke off, turned it around so that there is a little ridge for my finger tip to get a grip, and glued it on that way. About every 6 months a magnet comes unglued, but I never lose it because it's always stuck to its mate. I just glue back to its spot. , been this way for about 3 years. Nice, cheap repair.

One of our members had a preventive tip for this failure.

A dab of silicone behind the latch, contacting the cover will prevent failure. It will prevent over-flexing of the latch.

Just paid another year of the TDR fee. :)

Anyone have the part numbere or the online source for this part?

Mine just gave up the ghost. Must have been one to many times accessing the TST remote. :(
