I don't know how much it would help but I took a hole saw and cut two 21/4" holes in the cowl so that the air filter had more cool air. I also made a heat shield from some reflective insulation "Airfoil" (foil with bubble wrap in between another layer of foil). The air filter sucks from the fender and the cowl. Its not sealed air tight but it should help cool things down some. I don't know what kind of exhaust housing you run but a bit bigger should help egts some. Also a FASS helps lower egts but they don't seem too popular on the 12v engines. Aftermarket intercooler would help egts probably too.
 
When we put a FASS on my brothers '01 his egts dropped around 100 degrees and boost went up 2psi (Edge EZ, 4in exhaust, BHAF). No air in fuel your timing and atomization is better thus lower egts.

Thanks for the info. I understand the theory behind it, I just do not think too many people who install a FASS see similar results. I'm glad he got more out of it than just an upgraded lift pump.
 
His truck also idled smoother and the SOP Dyno felt an increase. His mpg went up a little as well. His stock LP (#2) might have been a little weak but the FASS sure did the trick on his second gen 24v. We liked how well it worked we put one on a 855 cummins in our versatile tractor. It helped out the 855 too less smoke at startup and more hp. The tractor had a leaky fuel line that was probably sucking air which made the FASS do a more drastic change.
 
I have a little problem now. I backed off my fuel plate and get about 38PSI boost. I put the fuel plate back to stock position. the truck seems to have more spunk than when it did with the plate forward, it has less max HP though. My problem is now I have an EGT problem. I run a little hot at WOT about 1375*. I need to get this truck set so max fueling produces 1200* or less. I had it set like that for a while but made some changes and adjusted timing..... oh yeah timing. I backed it from 22. 5* to 15. 5*. thats probably where the EGT's came from. I need some recommendations on setting this thing up. I am WAY paranoid about heat after sticking #6 piston about 7 months ago. I do alot of pulling and I am actually thinking about sticking a stock fuel plate back into this truck and running it little forward. Or I am going to sell this truck and get a dually with 24 valve. don't know. seems like a am over working this truck. I don't want a speed devil, need a work horse.
 
Keep sliding the plate back or maybe try an 11. I do not know much about how the 11 performs in a 215 pump so I cannot say if this will help much but it is just a thought.
 
I have a #10 plate slid back in my truck I have it so the male end of a 1/4 drive will fit in front of it. I also have a 3k GSK. My boost is at 32psi now since I adjusted the governor arm. I think when you slide a plate forward or back you change the rpm and fueling slightly in relation to how the governor arm contacts the plate. The GSK I believe also changes this relationship. I did not have enough low end power so I backed out the governor arm screw to raise the arm in relation to the plate to make the fueling come on sooner. You may have to try sliding the plate back some more and adjusting the arm. One other option might be to custom grind your own plate to suit your fueling needs. That takes alot of time and trial and error. From what I have heard the #11 likes the stock position and not being slid around. I think it must be more difficult to tune. That is why I have a #10 slid back. I haven't towed yet but I think I will be quite happy with the adjustment. I hope my egts stay <1200 and boost <32. I should be OK.
 
Well I just got done towing a tractor back out to the farm. Overall I am happier than i was earlier. The truck does very well, it has a smooth power band and does not have strong spots and weak spots. It is a totally different animal with something in tow. The boost goes to just under 40 and stays there. EGTs were around 1150 max and the truck pulls like and SOB. If I used the governor springs and rev to 3450rpm then the EGTs went high. I think the key is using this plate in the lower RPM band, say under 3k. I notice the plate profile alot more now. When I start out the power is not too hot, then as RPMs get around 1750-1800 the power can really be felt. Around 3000 is when EGTs start to get a little out of hand if you leave the fuel wide open. When you go into 4th the engine rpm is right at 1750 again and when the turbo lights the truck accelerates very smoothly and then slightly de-fuels around 2900. 2500 in fourth gear is were I like to pull the tractor and everything is happy. if I hit a hill I back down to around 2000 rpm and let the engine pull the hill. I don't have to slow down it just seems to like it. this is getting long. . sorry hang in there. I am really happy with the setup. In the future I need to use the truck when I set thing up, as when this engine is working it is a different beast. versus just getting on the road and driving empty. I am still in need of a bigger truck though, a dually would be nice. :-laf
