Well it sounds like you've decided to go with the C engine. Who have you approached so far? I would not be afraid to embark on this journey and possibly wind up being the C engine guru. This is in the true name of Hot Rodding!
Just think of the performance pioneers behind any engine. Let's say, the 426 Hemi. You had guys like Tom Hoover, Keith Black, Dick Landy, Jake King, Ray Barton- even to today- people messing around looking to increase the output of that engine.
But you need to take the first step, say build a C to max marine specs, and really science it out- Blueprint it- as they say, attention to detail etc, I would think youd have a good start. I think the pump guys who are already out there would contribute to the effort, and who knows what could happen?!
One of my favorite classes of racing is NHRA Comp Eliminator. Here you will find the true hot rodders and thinkers. One of my favorite cars is a '27 roadster powered by a Ford 300 6. When you see this engine, you'll notice that the head is strange. I approached the owner, Steve Ambrose, many years ago, who is/was a Ford engineer, and he thanked me for noticing and proceeded to explain. This engine has the same bore spacing as a 351 Cleveland V8, so he took a few aluminum hi flow cylinder heads, and joined them to make a 6 cylinder Cleveland head. Just brilliant. Nowadays he has matured a bit. Here's an article for inspiration.

I hope you follow through. Roll the dice- you never know!
