2003 guage issues

Ok I got this superchips tuner years ago and it works great for adjusting tire size and going through tow, economy, stock and performance modes.

now... . get the worst fuel economy and lowest power

economy runs great, better mileage, but I can't leave anyone in a cloud of black smoke or spin the tires.

performance seems great, but when I'm trying to accelerate off the line, there's a huge lag time it seems like... I feel like I can accelerate faster in stock or econo... always thought it was because I am not getting enough fuel to the engine... ... stock injection pump (less than 10,000 miles on it).

anybody else have a superchips and have had issues similar (and have a solution)??

ok so I am driving an '03 2500 4x4 with 8 foot box. quad cab slt. 35" pro comp all terrains with 2'' levelling blocks and skyjacker nitro front shocks. s&b cold air intake, mbrp cool duals exhaust system, 17'' rockcrawler black steel rims... ... .

also to clarify further the first post -

1) economy - runs smooth, no power
2) performance - here's where I'm not satisfied ( now thinking possibly governor issues limiting my rpms?)
3)towing - I prefer to tow in stock mode - feels smoother (or economy for that matter)
4)stock- poor economy, poor performance

so again, problem is I pound the pedal and do not accelerate accordingly.

Hope this helps

I guess I don't understand the desire for clouds of smoke and roasting tires. One is overfueling and the other is a lack of traction. I can spin the tires on my 100hp DD, doesn't mean it's got gobs of power.

I would start with things like fuel and air filters. Then check LP pressure.

I cleaned and re-oiled my air filter about 15,000 km's ago. New fuel filter less than 3,000 km's ago. I don't really want to do burn outs (can't afford to burn my tires) but I would like to wipe smirks off all the gas trucks/import cars in my area..... surprise the $h!% outta them. I just feel like I'm not getting enough fuel. Unfortunately two years ago I broke down in Edmonton a week before Christmas and could only get the local dealership to work on my truck. Replaced lift pump with the in-tank system. New CP3 pump. Made no difference before and after the replacement.

LP pressure?

What RPM's are you trying to get to? There is a rev limiter and a top speed govener, neither affect the performance until you get there. The rev limiter is 3200rpm. I am not sure how well the SC works on CTD's, have not heard to many positive coments on them.

I would return it to stock, throw away the Superchips, have someone with a Smarty re-flash it to stock, see where you are at.

Really?? Excuse my rookie-ness here... this is only my first diesel and second 'truck'... won't mention what the first was.

Anyhow... re-usable air filters are no good??
Should I throw in a paper one and see if there's a change?

I read in a post about rev limiter/governor in a different situation as being the power killer...

Now, this is how it 'feels' when I have in in performance (my terminology is awful and knowledge limited): Feels like I'm not getting enough fuel!! I've always felt that... but when I had my CP3 and lift pump replaced, and didn't notice a difference, I figured it must be something else... albeit the replacements were OEM parts. .

I noticed you have the same year truck. Is the '03 an avoided year?
Thanks for the reply to my thread as well. I have no friends or family interested in trucks or diesel or anything so this is really my only way to learn anything...

can't throw away the superchips... . it was $400 a few years ago... ouch... and would using the superchips tuner to program back to stock mode not do the same thing as the re-flash with a smarty? I'm not against trying to go backward and then do things right... it's just that $$$$ is always an issue so... hate to do things twice y'know?

The problem with oiled filters, is the re-oiling and the procedure and application used. I have been using both oiled and dry without incident, I respectfully disagree with the folks who are totally against oiled filters.

Not at all, I would argue it's one of the best years for many reasons, emissions, cam, piston design, mpg, to name a couple. There are also improvements the later years enjoyed, they just do not come to mind.

No, the 03's and early 04's are arguably some of the best Dodge Cummins ever. Good power and decent FE.

Of course I'm not bias. .

I agree with PD, I am not biased either...

The Superchips is kind of like PPE for the Dodge/Cummins, once folks downloaded their(SC, PPE) programs into the ecm's, they spent hours trying to remove that software and return to a stock program that Smarty would recognize and repair. I am not being facetious, take the loss and dump the SC. Start over with Smarty or a stock Chrysler flash, then use Smarty to re-program or leave it stock... your choice.

Most people, who approve of the aftermarket programmers/boxes... will agree Smarty is the best, the rest including Edge products(from personal experience) will not be the best for our trucks. Jess

The superchips is known to be a cheaper, more problematic tuner.

I would set it back to stock, change your filters, and see where you are at. Also pull the air intake tube and look at the turbo. See if it drives stock how it should.

It probably wouldn't hurt to pull your IAT and MAP sensors and clean them with the proper solvent for electronic sensors from your local auto parts store.

Do you ever run fuel additive?

I thought superchips were a safe, quality tuner... oops.

I use Power Service's Diesel Kleen in the winter every other fill up. But normally I just pump premium diesel where available. I'm going to set it back to stock with SC for now, and look into a Smarty in the near future.

I agree about cleaning the sensors as well, and will do that tonight or tomorrow after work. (yes I work saturday AND sundays)

thanks for the help
