I am thinking about dumping my DDIII's and picking up some DD Supermentals. (See sig)

I rarely tow, but occasionally pull a 3,500lb boat in the summer.

Would the Supermentals be too hot when I tow this boat?

Also, can I realistically expect a 20hp increase over my DDIII's? Even if the HP increase is negligible, the nice lopey idle is almost worth the change... . :D :D

I'll see if I can get this in before the SQL server is rebooted... .

I have had my DD3's and HX40 in for almost 2 full years now. Have only towed once with them in - my dad's Toyota 4x4 loaded with hunting gear, my estimate is it weighed about 5000 pounds total. My EGTs were always below 1100*F at 70 - 75 MPH, going up slight hills (highway 15 towards Las Vegas).

If you have the turbo for it, I doubt SM's would produce critical EGTs only towing such a light load as you mentioned, but that's only my gut feeling.

When I ran Super Mentals the idle was very smooth, no lope. All the other guys I know running them experience the same thing..... Now there may be some out there who have the lopey idle I have just have not come across any.

Heberam has Mentals & has a nice lope, so I guess I just assumed that Mentals do that... ;)

I have mega-mentals and the idle is pretty smooth,, just a random lope, nothing smooth, or rythmatic, just a smooth transition from,,,

lopey, to smooth, to rough, then smooth, and lopey again, in no order, (no more than 25RPM, not noticable on the tach) sometimes rough, then lopey, then rough, sometimes it's very smooth all the time, my truck is more lopey when hot.

sounds cool, Sounds like power :)

the dual 5" stacks and HX-40/18 also give a deep exhaust tone.

Side note, I have mentals in my truck, and I love the lopey idle. :D

I get the loap with the DD3's on occation.

ETH's loap a little more as injectors get big compared to the ETC's. He may have to go with MM's to get the idle.

Evan, the load that Steve is talking about really can't be considered towing... ... he should have no problem with that light of a load and the SM's. However if he were to start lugging around a Massey Ferguson 360 4x4 front end loader with emplement and all four tires loaded with CaCl... he may have a problem.

I think the race pump had a lot to do with his lopey idle. I ran a set of DonM's mach 3's and towed a trailer (16' enclosed with my 4 wheeler and a bunch of other stuff in it) and didn't have any temp problems. Don said they should give me 60-70hp more than the DD2's I was running. This was in a auto truck at elevations from 3k-5k+. With the 5spd you can always downshift and keep temps in check at decent rpm's.

Nathan

BTW the mach 3's have a nice lope to them too.

mcummings i run the megamentals also & they seem to surge alot at half throttle. do your injectors do this?mine idle fine & run smooth until i hit about half to 3/4 throttle then they surge & run like crap until i hit full throttle then they run perfect. ive tried differant fueling boxes & nothing helps. i realize these are race injectors & are not meant to be at 1/2 throttle but it would be nice to have a big set of injectors that would run smooth at any rpm. does anybody know if the big edm injectors do this. i want to hear from the guys that are running at least 150 horse injectors. thanks kurt.

Except for the constant stram of exhaust smoke, and alot more power,, these injectors behave better than stock when on the fuel pedal.

No surge, Nothing out of normal,, only an "odd" idle,, not noticable by most people, but other CTD owners MIGHT notice.

I think it's something with your truck. :( maybe a TPS, VP44, Lift Pump, MAP sensor, or even loose connections on the ECM.

I have a 6-speed if that changes anything,,,

Are you crazy?????

Steve..... You've got to be crazy to run Supermentals or megamentals! Oo.

As far as towing light loads, you should be alright. A little trivia , Lawrence of DD named the "mental" series injectors, because you had to be insane or "mental" to run them!:p

After meeting you in Boise, I think you qualify for the task! Go for it "DEZLPWR".

In that case, I better get some! :D

Steve,

I have run two different sets of supermentals in my truck and they didn't lope. I don't think ETC's lope like you would like.

If your not coming out to drag race with us, then why bother changing injectors?

I just pulled my mentals and went bigger. I built a loader to haul my 18' Triton fiberglass boat/trailer/150 hp Merc and I tow a 31 ft. travel trailer w/slide. My gross weight on state scales is 20,800 lbs. There are lots of steep mountain passes here is Oregon and the mentals worked great. I tow with my comp on 1X1 and ease on the petal to minimize low boost smoke. A long 6% grade will require about 1/2 throttle to maintain 60mph and egts will hold at about 1150. Can easily accelerate and at WOT will see 1250. See sig for mods

I guess Nathan is right... . In order to get the nice lope, I need Supers and the DD Hot Rod VP44, but for another $2k over the price of the hot rod VP44, I can get a P-Pump conversion.

If I had an auto, I would drag race, but having a 5spd, 3. 54 gears, and 35" tires, my truck is a real dog off the line. Roll-on acceleration is hard to beat, but that means very little in drag racing.
