Greetings, I wish to add an extra fuel filter near the tank and before the pump and I notice their are two lines leaving the fuel

tank my question is? which one is supply, of which I should use for the filter (which is a Racor by the way) any help is much appreciated, a service manual is on order.

thanks DOC NIELSEN

Doc - This sounds like a really bad idea considering the history of lift pump problems we have with the 24-valve engine. The last thing you would want to do is to add any restriction between the tank and the pump. The pump wasn't designed to be as far away from the tank as Dodge located it in the first place. Why would you want to an in-line filter? The stock Fleetguard filter does a good job and is relatively easy to replace.

Doc - If I remember correctly it is the bottom one. Get under the truck and go to the front, you should be able to reach up towards the feed from the current lift pump and follow the line.

When I talked to the commins engineers they told me that this lift pump had some quality control issues in the past but that it was a much improved design as of 2001. The guy refered to many school busses with same application and that the heighth that the pump was drawing from was well within the npsh requirements of the pump. I know a great out cry will be sounded here but there may be other factors envolved to contribute to the failures. When I read threads that the pump pressures are declining, signaling that a pump is going out, it tells me that somthing is wearing out from a cause. A sudden failure says that it just broke. My approach was to install a high quality (between the tanks and the pump) H2O knockout /low restrictive filter to protect the marginal pump from contaminents. Also to help with lubrication, a fuel cooler on the return line to keep the fuel reed vapor pressure down. Fuel becomes lighter with heat and loses it's ability to cool and lubricate. I also put in a few onces of Marvel mystery oil to ensure lubrication at fillup's. Yes! I carry a spare pump in my truck too. I watch my guage, 15 psig. , so far, so good.

Good ideas badams but I'd be careful of that water filter, it may not be compatable with diesel fuel over the long run. I've seen some types of plastic melt after several months contact with diesel.
