My 2002 with 62,000 miles when started warm or cold revs about 200 rpms higher than idle for a split second than come back to normal idle when starting the truck not touching the pedal at all. My 1998 12 valve goes right to normal idle with no surges. Is this normal??

Mine also has done that same thing since I bought it at 18k miles and still does it even with a reman vp44 and does it with my EZ on also. It sounds like a gass engine with preignition issues. or like an engine that starts with ether. Mine only does it on cold start only.

Mine started that mess just before the Vp-44 would go out. Both times before I had the FASS Fuel Pump, I am now on my third VP and with the fass and no more surge at start up in over 56,000 miles.

Well, I have the same split-second surge every now and then. Mostly does it when cold, I have noticed it a few times when it's all warmed up and I'm running short trips around town. I was hoping it had to do with where the engine and pump and all landed when it shuts down. Seems like there's a little puff of smoke with the surge like it gets a bit of extra fuel until the controller compensates. I hope I'm not getting ready to join the VP club, got just over 6K on it since I acquired the truck. When I got it the dealer said the LP ws screaming, smart to replace it before the VP goes, they put in the in-tank job. I haven't gotten a fuel pressure gauge yet, the truck runs great, everytime I try pulling codes with the key I get nothing. 165K on the clock.

2000-2002, you cycle the key three times, leaving it on the third time. And the OD display reads out the codes. SNOKING

So, I've got a Supechips programmer (came with the truck, I've never hooked it up, everything is stock due to transmission replace right when I got the thing), it can read DTCs so I hooked it up last night. Said no DTCs. Will the wonderful P0216 always throw the light on? Since mine isn't on should I not worry? Is there something else I should be doing since I've got that in-tank lift pump, now?

All right, maybe I've figured it out. Since about Sunday I've been very careful to wait for the "Wait to Start" and "Water in Fuel" lights to go off (I believe this signifies the end of the self diagnostic portion of start-up). I haven't had a single time that the truck surges on start-up now, the manual actually says to wait for those things to go off, too. My guess is previously I was starting the truck during the diag. cycle and caught it in a bad spot. Any other thoughts?
