Surge under acceleration

When in 4th or 5th just cruising then step in the throttle and the boost starts to build then all of suddenly makes a surging noise but once it gets up on the RPMs it then boost just fine no problems or surge noise but happens mainly when cruising then stompin the throttle is it really surging or maybe a leak just stock h1c with BHAF 16cm2 housing stans 4in exhaust fuel screw turned a little smoke screw bottomed out

nope it is a turbo surge or the technical term is "compressor stall". High fuel low rpm high load is the condition this usually happens. You can't do much to repair it. The only option is to turn your pump back to stock settings, or replace the turbo housing with an upgrade from GDS or HTT , one of the stage 2-5 upgrades... They have what is called a "Map Width Enhancement" slot that allows the compressor to continue to spool without stalling. It isn't really more efficient as much as it is safer and better for the turbo to prevent stalling, it is hard on the turbo shaft. I have been through it all, and have just settled on an hx-35 from a 2nd gen, they all have the MWE slot.



I don't think you have a boost leak.



I have heard of a couple people who have machined their own MWE slot in their stock h1c with good results.

Like pepecat I also went thru this but solved mine by installing a compressor wheel and housing (that had an MWE slot) from a 94 WH1C.

Alright thanks that sounds good to me cause i got a 94 WH1C here at the house that blowed a oilseal and i can just swap compressor housings

You need to swap both the wheel and the housing.

The 94 WH1C wheel is ever so slightly larger than the 93 or 92 wheels.

I went ahead and swapped the housings but not the wheels but that isn't goin to hurt any thing is it? the wheel for the 94's turbo sort is trashed cause it had the seal blow out and it scuffed the housing didn't hurt the housing but trashed the wheel but my turbo on the truck doesn't have any compressor stall at all anymore

No it will not hurt. The wheel will just have more space around it so it won't push as much air.

I actually ran mine like that for a few days until I had the time to change the wheels.

I cut a slot in a Dodge Original housing H1C. I was told you can't do this, so naturally I gave it a try.



No problems with anything. I would not recommend this as it would be much better to install a larger comp wheel with the matched housing. But I did give it a try.



It made for a real noise maker. That thing whines and I'm talking shrill/high pitch. I don't hear well and can hear it plain as day from 3 psi-on. It bothers folks riding shot-gun.

Hey Greenleaf how did you cut the slot cause dad has a huge Jet Lathe at his work and was going to try to cut into the housing (until I get a new compressor wheel that will be a few days) but the noise won't bother me cause love the sound of a squealin turbo (that's about the only reason I'll drive my dad's 04 Dodge)

I usd a die grinder w/cutting wheel.



The front edge of the compressor wheel blades are right at the slot. I can see the blades through the slot. In other words, the slot is not in front of the blades nor is it set back any. It's right at the end of the blade.

That is what my dad thought about doin but we weren't sure how it would do about a clean cut so we swapped housings and buy the bigger wheel but thanx for all the advice
