Read signature for fuel mods. . and answer me this. Should a qwikspool B-1 with a non-wastegated housing be surging with my fuel setup? seems like guys with the same amount of power running a stock turbo don't have the problem. . curious to see if anyone else's has done this. PS. . Only does it in 5th or 6th on the highway under WOT above 2000 rpm.

For the last 40K (mainly towing) I've been running a B-1-2t which is basicly a qwick spool turbine wheel with the larger housing and have never had any problem at all with surge.

I once tried an HX-40 with an 18cm housing and it surged a lot

how on earth did you get an HX40 w/ an 18cm housing to surge

did you see the needle bouncing? what conditions did you see surge?

My HTB2 does the same thing in 5th gear, higher rpms @ WOT say climbing a pretty steep grade. The needle bounces as you slightly back off WOT to about 3/4 throttle but staying in it to keep up speed going up the grade. You can also hear it surging real bad while watching the needle. Haven't tried it since I gave my AFE a good cleaning but it was pretty dirty when it did it last so I think that may have been the cause... . we'll see this weekend. :)

also, a stock turbo won't surge because it doesn't try to move more air than the engine can take...

I wouldn't think that is my case(i know mine is not a stock turbo) but how big of a single can you go before needing more air mods than just say an AFE, 3 piece manifold and larger diameter exhaust?

Well, you had the same turbo on your 24V and it did the same thing. I wonder if its the turbo? Maybe it just takes a genuis to figure that out.

...

Jason the flutter with other motor was for maybe 1 second on 5x5 after 75mph WOT. . no where NEAR what it was doing now. You do have to remember this turbo was build by Mr. Diaz back in early 2004, his newer models should have this issue resolved. After seeing how discusting a Phatty 62 surges on a 24v with minor fueling, mine doesn't seem like a problem anymore. I don't have it set up right, need some more technical things worked out before i worry about Performance. FYI. . my friend and I put the motor in it. .

surge generally doesn't occur at high RPM at WOT

if your turbo surges, it's gonna surge... the only things you can do is drive around it, put a bigger turbine housing on it, do a cam and or some head porting... and it still may surge depending on the turbo.

.

maybe i used the wrong word here, i'll call it "flutter". . surge is what the Phat Shaft brand does lol :-laf . . this is more of a rattlesnake sound versus an old man snoring if that makes any sense :-laf

if the boost needle is bouncing, it's compressor surge, must be a sweet spot right there where the turbo is trying to move more CFM (not lbs/min mind you) than the engine can accept

I am running a Banks twin ram, but I don't think that could be a factor in the issue. I guess that word "flutter" is a much better word used to describe what it's doing. Mine still surges pretty good only in 5th gear after a test with a freshly cleaned air filter yesterday and it almost seemed to surge worse. The needle just jumps a bit as I depress the go pedal close to WOT and 32-38psi boost and then once I get to about 40-42psi boost and when I back off slightly to say 32-34psi, you can hear it "flutter" and watch the needle bounce even more. It's like it is trying to move so much air in that gear only @ WOT or close to it and it's getting restricted somewhere and pulsating the intake air charge. I guess I just need to rig up some kind of blow-off valve after the compressor and see if that relieves it some.
